Spontanious combustion is not likely in a tent.
I cook in my tents always have done always will do. I don't and won't cook inside a small tent though. There have been many house fires over the centuries, but we don't all cook outdoors. There will probably be many replies saying don't ever cook inside a tent, but there's probably as many do as don't. Cabanon and other manufacturers actually provide a kitchen section within their tents, so they must think it OK.
I always stand with the door open and available for a quick exit, and never have the cooking equipment between me and the door, I think this is just common sence.
I've posted this many many times before, but we are all in so much more danger when we get in our cars, and very few posts have ever asked should I go camping because I will have to go by car.
It is sensible to ask the questions you have asked though, if you are not sure about things.
