Sorry, just noticed you were talking about free wifi, ours was paid for wifi, we paid for the week when we got there.  Don't know if that will make any difference to the speed.

Typically on a paid system, bandwidth is granted per user - ie you purchase a set block of upload and download rates and what you do with it is up to you (its still usually pretty low speed) whereas free wifi is usually just set per site, and distributed equally among users on a first come first served basis.

Systems with a paid solution typically can offer better speeds as they can have multiple adsl links, high speed backhaul as its a revenue generating and therefore allows extra to be spend in providing a good service.

Free WiFi on the other hand means the campsite owner doesnt recoup the initial investment for a long, long time, and is also burdened with the extra ADSL and legal compliance and monitoring charges.

on that note, if you happen to bump into any sites that don't have wifi service, please pass on our name and we'll do our best to get them to offer free wifi for you.

Thanks for your thoughts and advice folks.  I did wonder whether trying to watch TV would be deemed as 'hogging' the bandwidth, so I will have a re-think.

Maybe the compromise would be to try using SkyPlayer after most people have gone to bed - I tend to be a bit of a nightowl.

I will use headphones (obviously) so as not to annoy the neighbours!!

How does the TV license apply to camping etc.

Are you covered by the license that you may or may not hold for your house?

Recently an official letter was printed in the local papers letters page warning/stating that a lot of companies were in breach of regulations if employees were watching streamed footage (particularly aimed at Wimbledon) in adresses not holding a license
