Sorry to hear about your experiences! Get another weekend booked and enjoy it as soon as you can.

As for France, well its a long drive, its more expensive - especially if you have school age kids and you are not guaranteed to have good weather. We would like to try France but actually quite like camping in this country thank you!

Hiyas, sorry to hear about your little 1 ...hope all is well now ....& a big congrats on getting your dream tent & all by giving up ciggies WELL DONE YOU ! As to camping in Uk / France i don't mind where i camp as long as i camp lol. Haven't been to France yet but have been to Holland. My youngest doesn't cope in the sun very well so getting all packed & driving for hours to follow the sun isn't really for us anyways.

Madz.

Quote: Originally posted by Francais on 26/6/2011Well we first took our Son camping when he was 5, but never in the UK, imho it's just not the place for camping with a family, we have have always gone camping in the South of France during July, the weather is so fantastic, you don't even need a tent!, but having one makes all the difference.

Why folk even bother to go family camping in the UK is beyond me, but I guess it's each to there own.

Well I generally camp with friends and have enjoyed many UK trips. However, to be honest I am getting sick to the back teeth with the weather in this country. I mean take Sunday just gone for instance, a glorious hot and sunny day, perfect for relaxing on the beach in. So are we in for a week or two of nice weather? OH NO, we then have to be punished with a horrible cloudy and hideously humid day the next. Followed by temperatures back to 16/17 with the constant threat of rain. There are numerous lovely places to visit in the UK, but the weather is always waiting to P&&& on what ever it is you have planned for the day. It's June for god sake, is it any wonder that depression is rife in this country? We spend half the year with cold, wind, rain and less than 10 hours of daylight, most of which is spent at work. Then finally the spring arrives where we usually experience a bout of gloriously warm weather in April or May, everyone gets fired up and optimistic for the arrival of summer, only to rained on constantly again. It's like being punched in the face repeatedly, then it stops....just as you think it's all over, breath a sigh of relief and start mopping your wounds, it continues.

Sorry about that long, if slightly off topic rant but the bottom line is, I too will be off to South of France next year. I want to be relaxing on beaches for my holidays not constantly looking up at the sky and deciding if it is worth getting the BBQ out or if I will need a rain jacket or even wellies. I will still continue to holiday in dear ole Blighty but if I don't start seeing more sun I am going to get quite upset.

Years ago had the most glorious Easter long week-end in the Lake district, then in late June same year went to Sth France for 18 day's, 16 of which it was peeing down. Just luck of the draw - win some lose some.

Er, getting to the South of France with 5 kids, no thanks :)

Our disaster was last time we went to DHs Nan's farm. We set up with 2 inflatable chairs in the bell tent. EHU running from the static caravan under the edge of the tent with DH's iPhone plugged in, balanced on the arm of the chair. I was sitting in the chair, feeling quite smug about how lovely our set up was when DS came and jumped on my lap, launching the iPhone into a jug of water......whoops!!! Phone was ruined!!

Loads of disasters while festival camping, mostly involving mud and once involving un-pitching the tent to find a load of maggots under it....yuck!

Because

a) DH hates the heat and I hate travelling long distances

b) Don't have passports - for reason see a) above

c) Went to France many times as a child - well you more or less have to go to France to get to Italy, but was never tempted to actually stay there after the first year

Camping in France? Yes, I'd like to but it would be 650 miles from here to the south coast of England before we even got out of the country, never mind crossing the Channel and then travelling through France. We'd probably spend about 6 days of the holiday in the car.

Unpredictable weather is just part of camping in the UK. Be prepared for the worst, then anything else is a bonus!

Or - go camping as often as possible to increase the chances of catching any good weather going.
