We have a bucket and lid. It just gets emptied and rinsed out every morning, if it's been used of course.  I don't use cat litter, plastic bags or scented disinfectants, just water and a drop of washing up liquid to rinse it out. It's never smelled, not even in hot weather. The average bucket can hold a CampingGaz 907 bottle btw.

One tip though...boys of all ages can be pretty inaccurate when aiming so place bucket (or indeed portapotti) on a small washable plastic backed picnic rug. Or insist they kneel down to use it.

We have a Thetford. Personally I don't like the idea of buckets even if they have disinfectant, cat litter or whatever in them as I worry about them being knocked over or starting to smell if it gets a bit warm inside the tent. I also don't want the hassle of having to empty it every day.

We find it handy for those last thing at night visits, or if you need to go in the middle of the night. Rest of the time we just use the site facilities. Its our little bit of luxury when camping.

I wouldn't be withoug my portapotti.  Got it when we first started camping, not only for the kids, but to save leaving them inthe middle of hte night if I needed the loo.  
Now it is the dog that can't be left - you see he thinks tha tI need assistance when I go to the loo.
Part of me was thinking about changing it to something like a bucket with a lid - until Saturday morning whne Pip wasn't well.  Take one child draped over it, thiowing up, and you really appreciate the sturdiness of it.

OK emptying isn't my favourtie job - but it isn't hard or totally unpleasant.   Just do it every couple of days.      

We use the site loos during the day - but a couple of years ago the weather was that wet, we just used to portapotti save trailng to the loo block in the rain.

We have the Kampa Khazi and it has a little lid so you could do number 2's in there too but we have a rule that only wee's are allowed. 

We don't put toilet roll in there so only the wee with a little water and thetford blue or pink at the bottom keeps it fresher smelling overnight and makes it easier to empty, we have a small bin for the used toilet roll.  A nappy sack smells nice and can be tied to dispose of it.  I like to be green where i can but on this small matter i am not :(  It is the most convenient way and saves on toilet paper sticking to the toilet when emptying, yuck.
