hi all,
As new campers ive been reading this thread with interest. When we were buying our set up we were confused as to how we were going to heat up the tent without having to rely on EHU.
Having read somewhere that you shouldnt use a gas heater (we were thinking of those portable ones) if u have a SIG , we opted for a halogen heater!! Forgive my ignorance but is this not the case
I wouldnt be leaving it on all day, and by no means through the night - just to get rid of the chill in the morning and evening. Am i being a little over cautious??
My heart goes out to the families involved xxx

All I know is that if it was terribly hazardous to use a gas heater in a tent, they wouldn't be able to sell them. I think you just use common sense, and keep the tent well-ventilated. And of course don't leave anything on when you go to bed. It probably says exactly that on the instructions, but not everyone reads them.
Don't be too spooked, though, a lot more campers get hurt pulling equipment in and out of lofts and other high places, eating food that might have defrosted too quickly, putting up big tents in high winds and travelling to the campsite on our busy roads than suffer poisoning from fumes...
Not to mention domestic abuse when the trailer is full to bursting and one or other partner buys 'yet another great bargain' from Yeomans!
These accidents are very sad, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, but they are extremely rare.

Short-term use of a halogen heater appears to be a much safer option than any gas/petrol etc., device, though as Lassie mentions in this thread, if everyone were to use electric heaters to excess, the site would need to charge more to cover its costs!

Deeply upsetting to hear of this tragedy, god your hearts go out to the family.
I agree there needs to be a definite warning issued here, to prevent this occuring again. It is obviously not common sense or else these deaths would not happen.
Perhaps each site should use a poster stating the danger as I doubt tent manufacturers will, and in any case tents get sold on or borrowed.
Just so sad...

it is commen sense, just like dont leave a dog in a car in the sun...but the people that do just dont think and are pretty stupid. common sense tells you that fumes are given off anything that burns, either co or co2
