I've known him all his life (both mum and dad are very old friends) and he is a smashing young man, in many ways. His mother has gone off the rails in many ways since they split up - she's very needy and gives in to his every whim, just blowing up every couple of months, and then giving in again 24 hours later. Unsurprisingly, SS has learned to take advantage of this.
He's also lacked a good example as she has a very lucrative business which involves other people doing almost all the work and her having lots of holidays. He sees his dad wage-slaving (she wound up their business when they split up) for a sum that is paltry by the standards SS is used to and, perhaps understandably, can't see any point in that.
OH and I had hoped he would have grown out of this phase by now, but he seems to be getting worse. OH was opposed to him having the bulk of his trust fund this soon, but he's not a trustee, so had no say in the matter. At the time, mother had a boyfriend that SS hated, and it was a good way of getting SS to move elsewhere.
I suppose I should be crosser really, but I'm not surprised, and am most cross with myself for just not saying no. SS is hopeless with "stuff": when clearing out mum's car the other week, he threw away the locking nut for her alloy wheels - an expensive mistake. She's no better - she's back together with the boyfriend who trashed her house and did £20k's worth of damage to a valuable collection of ceramics. Egbert's right imo.
