I suggest the stainless steel mugs, they are awesome. Ours were only £1 from asda.
I've got some old metal mugs but the handles get too hot to hold, that's why we went for melamine. I guess I need to get some with insulated handles then.

My OH likes enamelled steel mugs.  I do too but not for tea.  Neither of us `gets on' with plastic / melamine ones,  I swear they make hot drinks taste `plasticky' !  probably is just psycholgical.

Ours are a brushed steel and they are quite thick and don't get overly hot.

I got some Stainless Steel double walled mugs from Tescos a few years ago and I use them for work, which is outside. The handle fell off one but that was fine as it meant I could stack one inside the other as we need two in a lunchbox. They are conical in shape and I have never found anything like them since. I would love a few more for camping with.

While I was camping earlier this summer I lost a few of my melamine mugs which cracked and dribbled out the hot tea, but it didn't completely explode. I'd put it down to their age, they were about four years old and have seen heavy use.

I have ordered enamel mugs but they have not arrived yet, I don't think I'll ever buy Melamine again as my teenagers like to make mugs of Hot Chocolate from powder which means the liquid is always going to be very hot when it hits the mug.

I've given up on melamine mugs too.  The set we've just thrown away we've only just bought and used on two trips and they've split already!  I know we drink a lot of tea, but that's ridiculous.  I'm now going to take pottery ones instead - besides I can also get more tea in them

Hubby and I have decided to just take proper mugs next time. Thankfully the mug was on the grass when I was filling it so I didn't get any hot water on me but the pop it made as it went did make me jump.
Tea tastes better in a real mug!

Certainly does. After trying all sorts of mugs and hating the disgusting taste I got with my cuppa, I reverted back to a good old china mug (though not the bone china ones of course)
