I can see your point, I thought that way too once upon a time , but I use a E-HU to give me more freedom, using electricity extends my camping season from Easter to November rather than the 3-4 months I used to do without it . An electric cool-box , electric inspection lamp and a fan heater with thermostat are very welcome even in the middle of summer . Camping gas cannisters can be an expensive when used for everything . But each to their own , ps a phone call before you set off to see if there are spaces on sites would save the worry or a wasted journey.
Happy Camping
------------- Are you the police? No mam we're musicians.
EHU pitchs usually need to be booked and on some site can be limited numbers for tents . Plus a nice weekend and you can just phone and go . EHU pitchs go quick but a perfect patch of grass can usually be found . The bigger the group the more problems you may have .
Even after 3 seasons I still get nervous which is daft really. The thing with me is putting tent up. I always have few words with OH, and on a couple of occasions on windy days we've snapped the odd pole. I tend to think everyone is watching which they're not, but when tent is up and kettle on I just suddenly relax and love it. We tend to visit local sites before we book just to get the feel of them. I would, if it is only 30mins. Anyway family are going with you and its not far from home, so, have a great time and welcome to the great world of camping.
I too would recommend booking since you have little ones and are going in a group..nothing worse than tired kids and nervous parents all in the same car.(speaking from experience)
We have never used EHU even when are children were very young, but that's just a matter od choice, some do some don't. Great tent you have though, plenty of room for you and your family.
Just grab the phone/mouse and book, you won't look back, years of fabulous(sometimes eventful) holidays just down the road from you....It's a bit like buying a new car and driving it away..takes a while to get the feel of it..
As for cooking,I have no experience of food intolerances(except my own lactose one) so I can't comment, but you manage to feed you little one at home,no difference away from home except you need to pack it.
And a very warm welcome to ukcs

Thanks everyone, I appreciate all the replies! My dad just came round and we're booking a weekend mid-april, then if that goes well we will go alone for the May bank holiday as we're away seeing friends that weekend and had intended staying in a b&b, but we're going to take the plunge and go with the tent instead
CW52 we're on the North East Coast, just near Redcar, so out first trip will be Whitby/Scarborough way. I notice you're in Durham - any sites in the North you would recommend?

We very rarely book, only do if we are going a fair distance. If we are going locally we wait until about Thursday, see what the weather is going to do then do a bit of ringing around. We have a list of favourite local campsites with phone numbers and to date we have always been able to get in somewhere, even on a bank holiday weekend.

Thats great news. I am sure your first trip will work out just fine for you all. Remember to let us know how it goes.
Regarding campsites. I can recommend Humble Bee Farm which is near Filey. It is one of our favs but such a shame its so far away. Another site we really liked in that area is Spiers House near Pickering.

I don't think you need to worry about your daughter's diet whilst camping. It's no different from home, really. You just dish up the stuff you know she will tolerate and enjoy, and there's plenty of choice these days, even if you don't have the kitchen to cook in.
I usually book, but out of season you don't have to, unless you choose a really popular site. The main advantage of booking in advance is that you can often request a favourite pitch, which of course only works if you've been there before.
I'm sure in April you'll have an absolutely wonderful time. Please post pictures!
