We have the problem of having to pay to go peak time as my son is doing his GCSE's and we recently got a letter from school saying he was going on attendance report or something (letter went in the bin - didn't bother reading it all because I was so cross). He'd been off ill for 2 days!! Had been ill earlier in the year and had I think 2 days off then, so 4 since September.

So we usually find we have the price for basic pitch and 2 adults, then about £3 per child, then EHU, then the dog....all more expensive in school hols.

£25 per night for us at our favourite site (fforest Fields), although their price is the same all year round.

Well that's me decided, come pay day I'm going to become a member of C&CC, it just seems to make sense if we're going to get away a bit this year, thanks

I wouldn't be too hasty at joining the C&CC until you have done some research. It is going to cost you the joining fee of £39 before you have been anywhere.

The C&CC club sites charge per person so that could work out expensive for a family.

The small CS's are probably better for a family because they tend to charge for two adults and two children although you need to check their locations and facilities. Some are a little isolated with basic or no facilities.

Club sites can get busy and it is often necessary to book well in advance. Whenever you book you will need to pay a £25 deposit and this is non-returnable within 7 days of the date of your trip.

Imagine a scenario where you wish to go camping on a Friday so you book and pay a deposit on the preceeding Monday. Unfortunately come Friday 40mph gale force winds are forecast at your chosen site and you decide it is too dangerous to go...that's £25 deposit down the drain! No returns and no credit notes. Add that to the £39 you paid to join (total £64) and you still haven't been anywhere yet. That's pretty much what happened to me.

Check all the C&CC club sites and CS's in the area you are likely to be camping and make sure there are plenty for you to choose from otherwise you will find yourself having to go to ordinary commercial sites instead and will have wasted your joining fee.

It may pay you, if possible, to check out the quality of the tent pitches at your chosen C&CC sites before committing yourself because as stated they are well used and often rather lacking in grass.

Apart from that, the C&CC is great.

Before you spend your money and sign up for membership you can search on campsites near you. Enter your postcode and look for certificated sites, I use the sort by “price lowest –highest” as CS sites usually have the lowest charges (they are looking at bringing back the filter for each type of site; certified, listed & club sites taken away on last “update”) . Then have a look at the fees of local sites which will give you some indication of the fees charged and what’s available.. Once you have seen what’s on offer locally, go and visit one or two sites on a day out. The owners are generally very helpful, I’m sure if you explain that you are thinking of joining the C&CC and just want to have a look around they will let you. After all you maybe a new potential customer for them! You can usually contact the sites via phone or email

Don’t forget that sometimes C&CC certified sites are reviewed on UK Campsite as well, you might be able to get more information and reviews about a potential site on here. If after all that you think it’s worth it, then sign up for membership. My annual renewal is £40 this year but I think that is good value as it allows me access to the CS sites (I’m sure some people will disagree). If you hunt around you may get a special offer for joining....

I have just checked a couple of sites I went to last year and there is no change in price this year. You Northerners should camp down south...cheaper

Even with some of the price increases you speak of, for us, we are starting to have camping holidays because everything else, in high seasons because we won't take the children out of school, is prohibitively priced! We have three children too, and many hotels or B&B don't cater for families of 5. Country cottages and similar either don't accept children, are too far away from anything to entertain the children much or again, are priced out of our range. We've been to centre parcs for several years, but, that was before the school holiday issue, we simply cannot afford to go there now.

Although initial start up costs are going to be steep, each time we use the equipement it becomes better value for money. It also means we can get holidays with my parents and my parents in law, as they either have a motorhome or a caravan.

Yes, there may have been increases, but, the people running the sites have to make a living out of it, and maintain facilities and, well, we all know how much everything has gone up in the last couple of years (my shopping bill this week almost made me weep).

You've certainly given me a lot to think about regarding C&CC membership as well as an excuse to spend more hours researching camping, I did have a look at local sites on the C&CC website and they did seem cheaper than commercial sites but I assumed the price was per unit per night not per person per night. Scouting them out in person is a great idea, thanks for the advice. You just can't beat the quality family time you get with a camping holiday, roll on the easter hols, hope you all get away if you can

C&CC membership may be your answer (with the same advice already given earlier in the thread). Look for CS (certificated/certified sites) near you first. That way you can have a look and get a flavour of what a CS site is like (it might not be what you are looking for). Then do the research into the area you want to stay and see what is available. Add in the yearly cost of membership (around £40) and work out if it will be economical for you. Generally a CS site with electric, toilets & showers will come in around £14-£18 a night all in (based on 2 adults/children & unit).   Certified sites are generally run by families so will not have all singing and dancing facilities and the sites will be much smaller. If this appeals to you then maybe a CS site might be an option for you. Depending how often you plan to camp and if you are willing to compromise on facilities, smaller sites and location then C&CC membership may prove to be worthwhile.

Please note that C&CC Club sites are more expensive... look for certificated sites (CS) as these are exclusive to the C&CC club. Listed sites are not the same as certified sites as these maybe bigger and open to the general public. Don’t forget to check UK Campsite for reviews of the site as some CS sites are listed.

Hi, I've just spent the last couple of hours updating my virtual brochure, ringing the campsites for 2012 prices/tariffs and I would recommend it to others as a lot of my saved notes on prices are now out of date. I've had to delete quite a few sites as they've gone over my miserly max budget of £20 a night non EHU. Just thought I'd share, I know it's only virtual but I make a lot of my camping plans based on this great info.

I personally think that expensive sites should be avoided unless it happens to be Windsor Castle or Buckingham Palace you happen to be pitching up on.

Jeez lads, ye have it good across the pond.
We're in the Republic of Ireland and prices are crazy but it's not known as Rip Off Ireland for nothing.
We stayed in 4 sites this year, 8 man tent, EHU, 2+2+1 dog
Our favourite site really ticks all our boxes, all 4 of us love it. It's also one of the cheaper sites that we'd consider properly kid friendly in a way that there's loads for them to do, very safe and they can roam where they want without us worrying. Comes in at €35(roughly £32) per night but stay 7 pay for 6 so about €210(£195ish) for the week. Showers are free.
This spot has a good playground, both indoor and outdoor, loads of empty green space, big pitches, a small animal farm, a chipper and free showers.

Another of our favourites is a beach side place. It's €40 per night but no free night for staying a week so works out at roughly £37pn or £255 a week. Showers are an extra €1 and the site is huge so you could be a 2/3 min walk from the toilets, showers and kitchen. It's got a poor enough playground but huge sand dunes and a beach like something from a post card that was a 30 second walk from out pitch this year.

We've noticed that prices crept up a little between 2018 and 2019. Mostly about €2/3 a night but some went up by €5.
Ridiculous insurance costs are being blamed for this but with the summer we had in 2018 there wasn't a pitch to be found anywhere for July and August so I reckon the site's figured all these new campers would surely be back in 2019, making demand jump massively so the price rose with with it.

Yes Bob, but if you read it you'll find that someone asked a new question about the virtual brochure:

Presumably because they used the search function (which other user's get grumpy about people not doing) and a couple of us answered it. So it doesn't really matter does it?

The last post (before I posted) referred to the cost of campsites based on the conversations about the costs back in 2012. I was merely pointing out that the thread was an old one and that prices have increased since then. (Unfortunately there isn't a sticking out tongue smiley icon so will this do? )
