We do not set a daily budget, and go with the flow

we never formally budget, but make budgeting decsions all the time...is this good value do we want need it...

does not make sense when you see it written down.

last year due to buying our equipment ,strong euro and being off work for a year we spent time around campsite ,cooked most of our own food, made sensible choises etc.this year Tent paid for ,I am working ,euro looking weaker will be able to eat out more leave campsite for trip etc but as always will look is it good value.

I remember always getting a set amount of pocket money per day on holiday as a child to use on anything I wanted other than meals. It taught me to budget as if I had spent it I couldn't have more that day. Now we do this with our son from the age of 6, when he could understand about money. He gets really excited that he gets £5 per day and can choose what to  do with it.

For the family budget we spend no more than £50 per day and use Tesco vouchers and other vouchers to get the best deals on days out, so I usually research the area before we go so we know what vouchers we can get and get these in advance.

When the kids were young we had no option but to budget while on holiday..Six of us to entertain...feed etc..No meals in service stations etc..Sat in the car with sandwiches etc...Only one visit per week to the amusements...But we seemed to manage mainly due to my wife's skills in that dept...

Now they are grown...I'm usually off on my own or with one or two of them..And must admit rarely budget for anything...These past 4-5yrs have been like some kind of payback for all the years budgeting for this and that and the other(those of you with young kids will know what I mean)I tend now to make sure my wallet is full...and if someone suggests something they want to do..We do it(still within reason)

A few yrs ago I managed to book a really expensive weeks fishing holiday..Luxury villa..16 lakes for exclusive use of residents etc etc...I spent the most money I have ever done on holiday...Getting there..In the place...and on the way home it was spend spend spend all the way...And I don't regret a minute of it...Does the soul good to break out every now and then...And having said all that...I' not really one for chucking my money about...But on hols..spend spend spend!!!

Jelboy.

ok all here's a challenge. except for food, camp fees and fuel, have a no spend holiday. Camp near woods beach, walks for fun. Find free museum for wet days, board games, books for wet evenings. No take aways, eating out. Put your chairs in the boot and picnic.

Although you can do loads of stuff that doesn't need money, I would have to spoil the holiday through lack of funds.
Also things like a meal/take away on the last night, if no other time, make my life far easier, as it means that I can pack up some of the stuff the day before.
My argument is that it is better to over budget and come home with the spare cash - which can be put towards the next trip, than be short when you are away.

Going back a few years, we had just lost the use of the family static van, following the death of my in laws, so had booked a static on a holiday park. I had budgeted x amount for spends - but didn't spend anywhere near this anount.    I had always wanted to go camping, and thought that it could be the ideal way of getting cheap holidays, as we were not tied to school holidays, as well as the odd weekend break, so having looked round the local camping shops, bought a starter kit with the money I had over.

We budget, Last year, we had 6 days away nr Chester for £250 - that included fuel, site fees, food, everything. I'd saved my Morrisons petrol vouchers, Tesco vouchers, nectar points, and subway points.

We got a 5 nights for the price of 4 offer at Elm Cottage, we used all of the vouchers to either buy shopping, or eat out. Took packing up on days out, went to Llandudno, Chester, Llangollen, Manchester (to watch planes!) and had a really good time.

No chance of doing that again this year - unfortunately shopping at Asda. Lidl and Aldi doesn't earn points for anything!!!!

I am all for the spend, spend, spend attitude if you can afford it. For some people though camping is a way of having a holiday on the cheap because they cant afford anything else. I think its nice that camping is for everyone and nowadays it can actually be quite a luxury hobby with big expensive tents and all the top class equipment. You dont seem to hear of many people on here who are on a really tight budget though, or maybe they just dont admit it!

Whats really important is not spending more than you can afford, whether thats £100 a day or a tenner!

I agree 100% - we spend what we can afford at the time, sometimes its a cheap weekend somewhere local with food from home and relaxing days with the Kindle and no days out etc. Other times its more luxurious, we go out, we eat out, we shop.

I get sick to the back teeth of people telling me I spend too much camping - if I couldnt afford it, I wouldnt do it! I have no debt, no credit cards and dont owe anyone anything, I spend what I have and no more.
