We did this with our Junior school a couple of years ago, we had to borrow a school field as our school doesn't have any green space around it We walked down along the nearby river and came back to the school for a BBQ.

I think everyone enjoyed it and the School made a reasonable amount out of it, but they've never done it again as the headteacher at the school who's field we borrowed moved away.

Real shame as it was fun.

One of the other local primary school's in Ipswich held their's last weekend, a friend went and said it was brilliant apart from the rain.

Good luck.

I do know because I used to have to do the H&S forms (Cossh, risk assessment and code of practice) for laboratory work with nasty chemicals.

But I think a total ban on home made cakes is a little harsh, apparently before the total ban the advice on the form was "reject any donated cakes if the person making them has dubious standards of hygiene" Ok sound advice maybe, but how on earth can you tell when something is made in someone's home, off site and with no one looking? I think the total ban is better than this statement. Even the most outwardly hygienic people may have secrets! Can't we trust people to make cake for their children's school, if not then we have turned into a really sad world.

I was thinking about this the other day.

For those that have done it, do you keep the school open all night for toilet access? or hire portaloos? or something else?

We are fortunate enough to have access to showers and toilets without having to open the whole school - we can just keep that area unlocked all night.
My friend has also done this at her school and they hired portaloos but obviously that increases cost as you need to cover the hire.

H&S issues aren't that bad when organsing such an event. I do a risk assessment and we have a strict policy that parents are responsible for their own child at all times (the camp out is not a babysitting service!) and no unaccompanied under 18s are allowed.

To be honest, everyone who has attended our events has wanted to be there to have a nice time. We have some simple Camp Out rules and everyone to date has respected these.

For food we arrange for a catering van to come on site and they give us a donation.

Entertainment is organised by me - quizzes, follow the clues (a bit like orienteering), races, egg throwing competition, arts and crafts etc...

The rules we have are things you would find on most camp sites - things like arrival times, to pitch where you are asked, no BBQs/bikes/scooters/pets/vehicles on site, put rubbish in bins, keep noise down between 10pm-7am, children remain your responsibility, leave toilets/showers in a clean and tidy manner etc...

We usually charge £5 per family (some families choose to share large tents)
We do a raffle too - tickets are £1 per strip.

The Camp Out isn't a major fundraiser - I do it to have some fun and to have a laugh and to introduce people to the joys of camping!
Last year I think we raised about £250.

Excellent photos 17 our date is TBA if there is enough interest, the reason for it is last years BBQ went on late and people didn't really want to leave. I'm still rallying around those that are undecided and using the excuse of not having a tent, tesco have a great tent sale online.

That does look really good Helen. My DS in his last year at primary school but if wasn't just about to leave I would definitely be mentioning it to the PTA.

Our school (PTCA) did this 2010 and 2011 as a fundraiser, A sat night. (Not this year...) Tents around edge of field. Rounders & games in the centre of the field. Bar and hotdogs/burgers for sale in the evening. Bacon butties for breakfast included in the pitch price. Not many parents get much sleep!

This is a great idea! I don't think any school here in Denmark ever did this, I will suggest it for the head and the teachers at the school where I work!

We are having a camp this year, but as we are a small rural school, our field may not be big enough. so we have spoken to the local farmer and he is well up for it, he has offered to clear out a barn, so we can have non campers for the day and evening and all be together round the campfire, no matter what the weather!!

he has done this kind of things before for his mates, and said they are great, so excited about it!
