We camped this weekend and it never stopped raining. I am too nervous to consider using the gas burners indoors, so hubby just cooked outside as normal with the windbreak around him (we have no porch/awning). We had lids on our pans, so it wasn't a problem when it was just a light shower. In the heavier rain, we just settled for salads and sandwiches indoors.
I worry about cooking in the tent too. If you can get a canopy windbreak you can have a cooking shelter for fairly little outlay (£17.99 on ebay, not like mine so can't recommend). As it's a windbreak you won't fall foul of those sites which charge for kitchen tents, and mine keeps the wind and rain off fine.

The pen is mightier than the sword - but only if the sword is very small and the pen is very sharp...
Well I have solved the problem and thanks everyone for your thoughts. I went to Blacks today and I got a pair of King Poles so I can prop my door up and make a canopy and I am going to the pound shop to buy a cheap tarp type thing which I can tie to the poles on one side to make a minature wind break. It'll do us fine for this weekend .
Had to laugh in Blacks though, the chap had no idea what I wanted, told me they didnt stock them (?!) so after I told him they did and he still hadnt a clue, I asked if he had any tent poles of any description which he did. He took me to the poles and I put my hand immediately on a set of king poles and then asked me what they were for. Just shows you learn something new every day :)
Dont cook in your tent
Dont camp if its raining
Dont camp if its too dry
Dont camp if its windy
Dont camp if its thundering
And most important of all DONT use your common sense
A little extreme maybe but what im trying to say is every question will get you different answers some of them quite alarming at times.
As you have probably realized everybody here has an opinion and most of them are driven by common sense and experience whereas some are not.You have found a solution and i wish you well for any future trips as you have shown you have common sense in abundance.
Happy camping
Hi Dragon,
Lol, I get your point and thanks, you are right it is all common sense, it goes a long way.
It's goo to get varying points of view, I alway think a brainstorm helps me to come up with the solution :)
Understand your financial situation, but it's not expensive to cook outside your tent (assuming it's raining - anyone can cook outside in the sun).
I use a DD tarp that cost about £40, with various uprights and guys I've acquired gradually over the years. But for years I used a blue tarp that cost me a fiver in ALDI (It's on my gallery, even took it to France). For less than £20 on eBay you can buy a decent-sized green or camo tarp, and some upright poles.
I came to camping years ago (less money, two kids) because it was a cheap break; over the years I've gotten more gear, but bit by bit, never breaking the bank. I bet you'll surprise yourself in a few years
------------- Camping Gear expands so as to fill the space available for its transportation.
Hi Hairywol, its surprising how it builds up, I gave all my stuff away when I was still with ex husband, kicking myself now as having to buy from scratch. I've managed to get most stuff (cheap version) to get started and will upgrade as we go.
For the cooking, I bought king poles today for 13 quid and a small tarp for a quid in the pound shop, sorted!
Going away in October so will get something better for then but this little set up will do us nicely for a coupl of weekends before then :)
