Nearest campsite to me(to my knowledge) is at Bridge of Allen just outside Stirling...Approx 12-14 miles away by motorway...a bit further by the back roads..Next one is at Abington just off the M74 3/4 of an hours drive away...Goodness knows how far(or long) on a cycle but I doubt my fitness levels next year would cope with any of them...

Wild camp...Yes...I could probably find a few spots within cycling distance to do this..But I had in mind some visits to a site 90 odd miles away from me for next year...Bike on the bus...Get off at nearest stop(3 miles away) cycle to site...pitch up and use cycle to get around locally..No train service to area so bus/coach is my only option....

From what you say Rob...and from what I'm hearing that option is looking a bit dodgy....Looks like a bit of back backing(and walking) might be a better option....

Thanks for your input and the tip re joining the CTC....

Jelboy.

Jelboy - just a thought, discard it if you like!

There are many villages with a pub, or a farm nearby, where you might be welcome to put up a small tent for the night.  If you are a member of the C+CC or similar there are likely to be certificated sites scattered about.

Might be worth looking at a map, rough out your desired tour, pinpointing likely stopping off places and ringing their pub, farm or certificated site.  A fiver or two pressed into their hands just might be welcome.

Its surprising how many people will say "yes" if asked politely and if you gain their confidence that you won't leave rubbish or make a nuisance of yourself.

Anyway, just a thought.

Thanks for that Dinky...But I'm not thinking of touring as such....More pitch up in one location and use the bike to get about...With the bus/coach issue I don't think that's going to happen...Shanks pony for me next year!!!

Ah well, worth a thought.  I'm a keen walker and shanks pony is good for me too.  Guess folding bikes would be the answer if you do want to put your bike on public transport but I do have one and its pretty uncomfortable to ride - its ok for short distances but I wouldn't want to do more than a very few miles on it and the small wheels rattle over every last little bump in the road.

Francais - your post about pumps made me look at the psi on my tyres for the first time in years.  They say 55, max 65.  I usually just pump them up till they seem "quite hard".  I've been running round on about 40.  So I then pumped them up to 55 (bit nervously - I thought they might burst in my face) and went on a 25 mile jolly.  What a difference!!!   All these years I've been riding on under-inflated tyres! 17

I also have an old fashioned long stick pump, I couldn't get on with the tiny ones they sell.

Found this post useful, everybody, its certainly taught me something.

Hey folks,

Been away for a few days so have not been able to access T'internet. Loads of information has been given here so i thank everyone for that.

With regards to the type of touring, i will be looking at mainly offroad, forest track type touring where possible. Obviously there will be some stretches of road, but i am hoping that 80% will be offroad.

Plan is for a 2-3 week trip after i have done a few one nighters. Good point regarding the public transport and bikes issue though. I am not planning on using any public transport as i am hoping to bike everywhere.

A question i do have, and hopefully someone would be able to answer is, if i set up a rough camp say a mile or so out of town, and decide to stay for a day or so, and i need to go into town, do you leave your tent pitched and unattended while away, or pack everything up and then re-pitch when you get back?

Thanks for all the info guys.

Scotty.

To your last point it's a matter of how you feel . I know there are places in Scotland that you can quite happily leave your tent for the day no worries but I'd say it's totally down to you if it feels right . We've always tended to stay on a sites as a rest day . So two in every seven nights would be on a site ! Shower wash cloths resupply and do the tourist thing off the bike .

Thats a good point Rob. If i do fancy a rest day, a site will be the place i will stay. We have been driving past seemingly "empty" tents pitched at the side of the road and we have always wondered about the security aspect of leaving them unattended.

Cheers,
Scotty.

I would think location and how you feel security wise would determine what you do when leaving to go into town for supplies etc....I reckon...even with a light weight set up it would be a bit of a bind unpitching..packing everything away only to set it all up an hour or two later on the same spot...So I would more than likely leave everything....Fair enough packing every thing away if your moving on somewhere and pitching in a different location later that day but for an hour or so I would probably leave it...

I have camped beside lochs while fishing in small carp bivvies...and from time to time have had to leave for an hour or so to top up on milk or something...but there has always been one or two others near at hand whom I have asked to keep an eye on my set up while I'm away...and have done the same for them while they have popped out for a while...But that has been with people Ive got to know over the week end etc...

I suppose it would be completely different wild camping on your own in some remote location....

Jelboy.

Yeah, it is one i have been pondering over for a while. I even thought about leaving a small radio playing so it sounds like someone is in the tent if i were to nip off into town.

Like you say, it would all depend on the location i suppose and the general feeling of the area.

Thanks guys,

Scotty.

This thread has inspired me to get out on the bike wild camping. I'm recovering from a knee op but took a short ride to peak district/ saddleworth moor along canal towpath mostly then slight hill towards end.
Beautiful Sunday night on hillside in Bivvy. Didn't break camp till lunch time. Nobody about only about 600m from main carpark but totally isolated.

Total kit weight measured up when I got home was 22.5kg. Including water clothes equipment. Boy does it total up with the small bits.

Loved ever minute.
