slighty off thread but didnt the ground sheets/ SIG use to be heavy weight enough to not need extra protection . i know our old vango had a realy heavy bath tub sig and we never put anything under it . Our tipi has a heavy sig and doesnt need '' Protecting '' we just use a blue tarp as a conviniant way to keep it cleaner .
The trend for light weight sigs started with backpacking tents ! which is great till you add the weight of the optional stone sheet / footprint witch is not really an option unless you have the money to buy a new tent every year .

We have a Macpac backpacking tent witch is 15years old and weve hardly ever use a footprint and because the ground sheet is made from quite a heavy weight materail its still in good waterproof condition . what im saying is if manufactures make tents with thin sigs shouldnt the optional footprint be actually included in with the tent ! ? or is it just me who feels slightly ripped off .
and just to get back to the op weve use the same thin plastic sheeting under some of our tents but as a light weight footprint not as well as a foot print !

I have a Giant Pearl ridge tent which is at least 30 years old and the SIG is a rubbery type of material and is bulletproof...I don't know why modern manufacturers won't use similar stuff...Perhaps it's deliberate built in obsolescence to encourage us mugs to buy tents more frequently than we need to.
