I dont get that AT ALL, Mucker! They must spend their whole lives preparing food! Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, Dinner, Supper...the mind boggles! Coffee for breakfast, sandwich for dinner, pie for tea- done!

How about a bit of maths

Take the time you are allowed on site and minus the following:

5.5 hours (approx - assuming an average speed of 57 mph)
1 Hour (allowance for two stops of half an hour or 1 stop and contingency wee stops)
1 hour contingency allowance for traffic/ road works etc

This formula can be adjusted depending on what time you are allowed on site and how many times you want to stop etc but for eg if you are allowed on site at 11 am you should leave at 3.30am however you run the risk of not using any contingencies and arriving on site 1-1.5 hours early.

Whatever time you leave you run the risk of hitting peak traffic somewhere in the journey.

My own rule of thumb - leave as early as possible for a long journey, ie the middle of the night if necessary. Personally I refuse to 'lose' the first day of my holiday travelling and setting up the tent so I leave early enough to get to the site by mid morning, earlier than that even if the site allows early arrivals. When I go down to the Norfolk site I leave home at 4am, with a couple of stops I'm there for 9 - 9.30am and got the tent set up well before lunch. That way I can relax for the rest of the day and I don't feel like I've lost a day.

Lol, the only way OH and I could leave at 3am would be if I went to bed at 7 and he stayed up. He doesn't "do" early mornings.

Years ago, I had a boyfriend who loved to drive through the night. He had a camper van, and I used to get the bed out and sleep en route, and arrive fresh as a daisy after a good night's kip.

I've travelled from Leeds to Newquay over the last 26 years (yikes!). Fastest time (without trailer, with stops) was around 7.5hrs, longest time 14hrs (again without trailer!)!!! It all depends on traffic/accidents/roadworks etc. Travelled down last year with trailer, took about 9hrs. There is only me that does the driving though (a mere female!) and we had plenty of stops. We do usually set off around 3am, but thinking of setting off later this year as I get really tired driving not having a full nights sleep!

FAO Mucker; dinnertime 12noon, teatime 5pm!

See if you can get a cheap travelodge and set off the day before. When you wake up the next day you'll almost be there.

We work out how far we can get to get to a travelodge about 9pm the a leisurely breakfast and arrive all refreshed to pitch

Is it just me? I can't see the point of leaving at stupid o'clock, doesn't that spoil the holiday? I know I would be grumpy as hell for several days If I was up at that time. We will set off at 10 am with the aim of arriving at 5 ish that will be fine

I ain't posh nor proper however wikipedia tells me I name my meals correctly .

I have Breakfast (cereal) in the morning within half an hour of getting out of bed, sometimes followed by Brunch (fry up) a few hours later (sometimes it's just Elevenses), a light Lunch is around noon (often skipped if I have had Brunch). If Lunch has been skipped I may have afternoon tea, the children have Dinner around 5 or 6 but as OH gets home from work after 7.30pm we have Dinner if it's ready before 8pm otherwise its Supper but I refuse to eat after 9pm, often tempted to refer to it as his last meal

Then there's the pudding vs Dessert debate, a pudding is nice but a pastry is a dessert and can not be referred to as a pudding!

We always try and arrive just after lunch time. For cornwall, that is a 0200 start for us! But its well worth it! Just under 500 miles.

We're also going to newquay on the 27th but from Glasgow. We'll leave at 2 or 3am as I can't be doing with heavy heavy trafgic. Hopefully we'll pass bimingham before breakfast. I want my whole first day on pitch even if I am exhausted, better that than spending it on the m5. I'm a bit of an early bird anyway so the thought doesn't worry me.

Shaun 123....just a thought- I was down the M5 on monday night and they were in the process of closing it completely in the Bristol area at 10pm for ongoing major roadworks.I didnt see the closure times .but there were diversions set-up.Luckily I squeezed thro, at 9.55pm! Campers living locally might be able to advise---these are massive works and will probably still be there when you are heading down.Good luck
