I've just insured our tent and contents with E & L insurance on a monthly basis for just under three quid per month. This is on a 'new for old' basis also. That way we only need to pay for the months that we actually go camping, so not bad at all. Tent and stuff covered for less than the price of a posh coffee.

I had already phoned our house insurance company who said they will only cover the camping equipment whilst it is in our home, so I thought it best to take out extra insurance as we've spent quite a lot of money on our new tent (it's going to be damn hard to put the tent up without the arm & leg I used to pay for it!)

Just watch the wording in the policy. It says new for old but this has a limited time frame and will only buy "new" if the new market value is less than the sum insured.

If the insured item is stolen or totally destroyed due to accidental damage, fire, flood or storm within the new for old period, as stipulated on your policy schedule, the replacement will be based on the sum insured value or new market value if less.
The new for old period always starts from the date of the insured item’s manufacture.

its such a tough one when you get into the nitty gritty of it, we decided to take a chance and went without insurance. Thanks for the input, definitely worth thinking about if you had a new expensive set up.

Old topic, but still relevant.

I just called Shield insurance to get a quote for cover - they wanted £97 to cover an £1,100 tent with £300 of contents, with an excess of £50.

Surprised how pricey it was, really don't see the point.

Yep I agree not worth it, I renewed all my kit back in 2008 and took out insurance with Shield, the Camping Magazine had a deal for joining the Camping Club, and the Camping Club had a deal with Shield, so I had insurance for what it was worth for that one year only.
