I have a prolapsed disc in my back and I cant sleep on airbeds at all. Being 14st doesnt help either. I use a sim and find in the mornings I have no back pain at all. I have a thin foam roll mat which has silver foil on one side which i place under my sim for insulation, extra comfort and helps protect the sim from anything that may be sharp underneath.

We bought 5cm ones from Aldi a couple of years ago and they have worked pretty well. I think it's worth buying a cheap one to see how you get on before investing in a better quality SIM.

We've just upgraded to a 7.5cm Vango double and that extra inch definitely makes it a more comfortable night's sleep
OMG we don't have a Costco any where near us so I get upset every time someone posts you can get this, that, the other at Costco but NOW you show me you can order online? not sure my bank balance is going to be please
SIMs come in a range of thicknesses and widths. There's a big difference between sleeping on a 3cm narrow SIM compared to a 10cm wide one for example. However, the larger ones do take up much more space when packed. We have a 7cm and a 10cm and find them both equally comfortable but the 10cm is much bulkier.
Also, if you use a SIM with a camp bed (I love this combination!) go for a SIM which is the same width so that it covers the side frames of the bed. I tried to save space by taking a narrow one last week and regretted it as my arms and legs kept coming into contact with the hard edge of the bed, especially the metal hinge bit halfway down. We frequently sit on the beds during the day as well and you need the hard bits covered to be comfortable.
I recently bought two of these after spending ages looking around online for good deals on SIM http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00CRZ2O1Y/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 10cm depth for £30 seemed great value even with postage added (just one lot of postage for the two mats so not too bad at all)
I slept on one for the first time last night and it was soooo much more comfortable than an air bed! They self inflate very efficiently. I actually had to lie on it and let a little air out to stop it being totally rock hard. Great supportive sleeping surface with a little give and no bounce. Warm and no annoying deflating overnight to contend with.
I am a SIM convert!
