Does anybody know what type of beastie is actually doing all the biting at the minute?.We were camping in Kewick last weekend and were savaged by them.I have around 40 on my lower legs and each one has swelled up-measures around 12mm-gone darkred/purple and itches unbelievably.They arent your average midge bites!We have camped for over 30years and have never experienced this.My bites surfaced within 12 hours whilst the Mrs.took up to 4 days for hers to surface.We did resort to repellant sprays on our 2nd day..namely jungle formula and various other chemist own brands but they appeared to have little impact on further bites.I have visited 2 local chemist,s--one recommends hydrocortisone 1% and other says definitely not to be used on large areas!He Recommends Eurax cream which is not steroid based.????? They both think a visit to the doctors would be a good idea--but--as most working people will know--the nearest appointment will be in 3 month,s time!I will have scratched my legs down to the bone by then. Almost forgot to mention-we were surrounded by citronella candles which attracted 100,s of black flies who apparently liked to swim in the molten wax Any thoughts?

I get bitten even with Avon on. The best relief I've had for afterbite is roll on deoderant. I just roll it over the bite and it takes away the itching. A compress with alcohol helps when my whole arm swells up. Take the alcohol externally and internally

Eat marmite on toast up to a week before you go and drink gin & tonic...its the tonic that works but gotta enjoy yourself

Smidge is the stuff to use, I have tried everything from deet to marmite to garlic...................Smidge works, end of.

avon skin so soft is a godsend! It worked against the Scottish midge and it also worked a treat on park foot last week .. midges there are a real pain in the a** sometimes!
skin so soft works a treat .. must be the blue one though

We've been using Jungle Formula Maximum Plus Gel this season. In conjunction with the incense burner going all the time, we hardly got bitten.

For those of you already bitten, antihistamine tablets work well for me to stop the itching. I buy the cheapie ones from local supermarket as they work just as well as the branded ones, and never go camping without a pack in my luggage. Start to take them the minute you realise you have been bitten and they will keep the swelling/itching at bay.

I used to be an Avon skin so soft sort of girl and it was fab however I'm now converted to Smidge. Great for keeping midges and clegs away.

I think clegs are the ones giving big bites up here just now. I've been scratching my bug bites from a couple of weeks ago when I didn't have any insect protection on.

i was clegged numerous times on the legs and feet whilst striking camp in the Lakes this year...didn't bother Smidging seeing as it was our last day...won't be making that mistake again...!!

we've been home for a few weeks now, but i still have itchy lumps where they bit me...this year was the first time i've been under cleg attack...nasty things and very persistent...felt like i was being stabbed repeatedly with a needle...

Greeny blue skin so soft dry oil spray from avon for me as well. Son mountain bikes all over and now promotes it amongst the riders, been on offer lately
