Well you do now! I also love luxury hotels, but camping is great fun, especially for kids.

It makes sense not to spend a lot on something you might not like, but equally, if you go too cheap and you tent blows away in the night, you are almost guaranteed not to enjoy it. Could you borrow one? Or get an end of line bargain? We found the tent reviews on here really useful when buying ours. I think 2 berths above the number of people sleeping in a tent gives you enough space to be comfortable, so for you thats 6 berth (I'm counting the dog as people).

Whatever you go for, don't forget to take a sense of humour.

Highland Trail Andes 6-Man Tent i'm new to camping and (tent is fine) just brought a used one a few mth ago for £70
sliding the poles in and getting it straight for the sleeping compartments is the worst bit, but i found you can greatly improve this tent for £50

1/ Buy a massive green or black tarp (not blue) to go under it you can get them for around £10, put it on the corner from front of tent it will cover most of ground hammer pegs into it as its only £10 and will last 10+ trips then put the included ground sheet on top of that roll ends of tarp to help with bugs and wind but also spread Citronella oil around edge you can get this for like £1 look for incense essential oil in a bargain shop (anything citrus lemon etc or teatree)

2/ shade sail from Aldi/Lidi for £20MAX can be as low as £7.50 it will cover 99% of the tent on a very slight squiff angle
keeps it cool from sun and dry from rain is 2000 rated hammerd down at the weekend kept sleeping dry as a bone a part from entrance leaked at top in 1 spot found it easy to put up by myself some say its hard was allmost put off just put guy ropes in off sides then loosen until you can get poles in simple.

3/ wind break for around £20 to go round 65% of it on the windy side

it is a cheap tent dont pay big for it, but better than a vis a vis type tent from Halfords etc as you can stand up in the center its nice for 4 people 6 would be okay also but not in the rain common area would be 2 small if you dont like going can allways sell it afterwards.

On first trip go close 1/2 hr so you can drive home if its not for you and practise putting tent up in a garden or someware local.

lastly had 1 split end pole after last trip reviews say poles are weak might be worthy to take a universal replacement

I would suggest first spending a few nights in a place where your ent a full furnished tent. That way it'll give you an idea of what you need to buy and if you find that you don't like camping then you will have saved yourselves a decent amount of money, time and effort. Good luck with it all.

I would try camping before caravanning just to see how you get on.

You can easily pick up a cheap used tent from Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace or ebay and try it in the garden / local park and see how you like it.

Avoid inflatable tents, they're very heavy, very big when packed, very expensive, and if you get a leak you are in big trouble!!

Caravans are much easier in some respects but towing & reversing can be a bit scary, they kill your petrol mileage, require maintenance and take up a huge amount of space. And be VERY careful not to exceed weight limits (I saw an overweight caravan being confiscated by the police while driving from London to Brighton last weekend). You have to be aware of the max weight your car can tow, the max weight the caravan can carry & the max weight you're allowed to drive on your license (which can be very low if you passed your test after 1997).

You can have luxury in a tent!

I never thought I'd like camping until I tried it! Don't scrimp, and don't listen to people who say that's not 'proper camping' cos you're not roughing it!

My advice is have a comfortable, warm bed. We have camp beds with SIMs on the top, it's as comfy as my bed at home. Avoid airbeds on there own, air gets cold in them.

Consider buying second hand if you're not sure then you won't waste too much money. Many of us on here have sold our tents simply to upgrade so there are plenty of decent second hand tents to be had.
