Camping allows you to pick and choose portable technologies.
If you want to camp in the cold then use mountaineering clothing and sleeping bags or link up to mains electricity and heating.
If your idea of a camping trip is exploring the local beaches and countryside then escaping TV and broadband may be fun, but your camping day may consist of microwaved snacks while watching TV and online chatting, you would need EHU lighting and heating in a big tent.

The car may be a power source for personal electronic devices but without a car you may want a 7w-10w solar panel.

It all comes down to your choice, start basic and buy what you miss on each trip, if you can carry it.

Unfortunately we forgot to take the camera even after numerous lists  To be honest we enjoyed getting away from everything including our mobiles and just taking in the beautiful views on our walks but obviously as the colder night draw in we may be going to the EHU. Ive already started looking for items that I think will improve our next trip. Ive benn lokking into buying one of the camping kitchens with storage as we had nowhere to put condiments etc.

I'd second that Regatta camp kitchen - fabulous price at the moment. It cost me £50 last year and I wouldn't be without it for any more than a weekend camp.

How about looking for a campsite that allows a campfire. We first experienced a campfire site without electric 4 years ago and now when searching for a campsite to go to I always go for fire above leccy

We generally stay warm around the BBQ in the evening; started with a small folding BBQ like the Outwell ones (also in Aldi recently) then upgraded to a small fire pit with grid. Don't forget hot water bottle about half hour before bed time.

So glad you all enjoyed it, Carl, especially the dog! (Has anyone ever had a dog that didn't like camping? All of mine have loved it.)

I predict lots of looking at camping kit online from here on in....

Could anyone recommend a site in the bakewell/matlock area where there are good walks for our dog. Im a bit reluctant to book somewhere and not be able to give my dog the walks he loves

Back to the original question EHU is obviously a matter of choice and what you can and can't "manage" without. We all rely on more technology nowadays and whilst I am a total anti EHU I can't manage without my phone or some sort of access to the internet for two weeks at a time. But as Fran said previously the rest can go to sea in a bucket. Quite happy to live by the light of the sun and a head torch.
I'm not much of a TV person so the radio is pretty much the norm for me anyway, we also like the slowed down pace of the camping lifestyle, where the day to day acts of living become your entertainment, start cooking dinner early rather than rushing in after work, peel the spuds, sit down have a beer, put the BBQ on then pop down to the beach for a swim. who cares if its 10 o'clock by the time you eat.
Even shopping becomes quite pleasant, especially if its the most taxing thing you have to do that day
