What goes around comes around as the saying goes
I've donated a bag of citronella nightlights in return for company and borrowing a kettle.
We've also lent (not given) an airbed pump a couple of times, and had beers in return. Exchange is no robbery (another saying).
I'd rather give away than dump or for food to be wasted. Although I might be more circumspect about really perishable stuff, whereas fruit/veg (wine) would be acceptable. Mind you, taking something in the spirit in which it is given, is always to be commended and then, if it's you (or the recipient) you can use/dispose of as you feel best.
I like the sharing/re-cycling spirit
We are the same, hate to dispose of good food just because we don't want it and so "donate" it - it does tend to be abroad though rather than here (although not always the case). We have also "shared" out things and got something in return.
Last time we were abroad and were leaving Croatia, we gave, amongst other things, our remaining chocolate and sweeties -the children were thrilled.
Once on a camping trip to Frejus, South of France, we gave a French family a couple of cold beers and some ice-pops for their girls on their arrival` before they started to put up the tent - it was just so hot and they looked cooked! We helped them and gave more beers and ice-pops and then in return they invited us to a fabulous meal with wine later and we became friends (even stayed at their house and they stayed at ours).
