I've been to several campsites in France where there's been a "miscellaneous" area at the recycling area and yes, it's usually at least sheltered if not undercover. First place to look for a spare chair or half bag of charcoal! My kids got really into it on one site and came back daily with a new find of a cheap fishing rod or inflatable for the pool, one particular day they found a putter with an unravelling handle and a golf ball taped to it. The site had a crazy golf course so it kept them happy for days. The single ping pong bat wasn't much use though.

I made them put it all back when we left btw! I don't tend to take found items home, with the honourable exception of the beach shelter that was given directly to us for our then baby daughter to use. That was a great present, she used it for an on site Wendy house and play base for nearly a decade. And we took it to the beach a lot. I still think of the nice family that gave it to us every time it comes out the bag.

I can't remember the site but they encouraged it..must be near the sea, there were inflatables + buckets, table tennis bats and spades etc.

What goes around comes around as the saying goes

I've donated a bag of citronella nightlights in return for company and borrowing a kettle.

We've also lent (not given) an airbed pump a couple of times, and had beers in return. Exchange is no robbery (another saying).

I'd rather give away than dump or for food to be wasted. Although I might be more circumspect about really perishable stuff, whereas fruit/veg (wine) would be acceptable. Mind you, taking something in the spirit in which it is given, is always to be commended and then, if it's you (or the recipient) you can use/dispose of as you feel best.

I like the sharing/re-cycling spirit

We are the same, hate to dispose of good food just because we don't want it and so "donate" it - it does tend to be abroad though rather than here (although not always the case). We have also "shared" out things and got something in return.
Last time we were abroad and were leaving Croatia, we gave, amongst other things, our remaining chocolate and sweeties -the children were thrilled.
Once on a camping trip to Frejus, South of France, we gave a French family a couple of cold beers and some ice-pops for their girls on their arrival` before they started to put up the tent - it was just so hot and they looked cooked! We helped them and gave more beers and ice-pops and then in return they invited us to a fabulous meal with wine later and we became friends (even stayed at their house and they stayed at ours).

My son, ever the entrepreneur was gifted a BBQ and couple of bags of charcoal when he went away with some uni friends; he then had the cheek to sell it on for £10 when he came home!!!!!

On our last camping trip a couple of weeks ago, we were given a pint of milk by people leaving the next day. I charged a mobile phone up in the landy for a couple and they gave me a can of stella even tho i told them its not a problem. Passed on information of places to visit as we camp locally a couple times of year to get it all out of our systems.

I have a static and in the toilet block there is a space that used to be used for dish washing when the site had campers & tourers it's a fair size and all sorts gets left there. As you change something in your van someone else may like your old curtains etc. Two weeks ago there was even a couple of mountain bikes. The main thing is dvds, videos and jigsaws. A wonderful idea. I've just put a pair of mens wellies in that are too small but otherwise perfect. It can be misused though, There is a pair of ladies wellies that are only fit for the bin and someone put a lampshade in that was only the shade and no fitting - just rubbish. Coat hangers are always useful and quickly taken.

A site that I use regularly has a box in reception for unwanted items of food and partly used gas canisters.

It is a great idea and adds to the friendliness of the site.

Last year in Germany, I gave someone some firelighters for their BBQ, and they reciprocated by giving me several ice cold beers. This was appreciated as it was a very warm 41 degrees

Often I'm asked for a hammer/mallet for pegs and of course a pump for airbeds. Maybe I should start charging
