Well........ That didn't last long did it how things change, we did have a couple of cracking staic caravan holidays last year and really enjoyed them, but we did miss our camping expeditions.
But now things in life have changed, our 19 year old son is working full time and no longer holidays with us, preferring music festivals etc with his mates, and our 17 year old daughter says she won't camp again, so...... I said to my wife would you fancy camping, just the two of us and the younger two? .... So that's the plan. we simply couldn't fit the gear in with the six of us since selling the vw van, but now with two less we've had a trial run packing the car and Roofbox and it all goes in.
We've decided on a static holiday and a few camping trips mixed in, so it's the best of both worlds,
Oh... I even brought a fantastic wolf lake 5 from the fee ads on here, I'd say it's the best tent we've had so far!
I think the moral of our story is once you've camped its in your blood for life.
On that note I hope you'll have me back!
Happy camping. Gaz

Why not camp like a backpacker?

You can get away without most creature comforts

Well we too have just done what I said I never would and bought a touring caravan. I love my tents but we have problems drying them out if brought back wet as we live in a one bedroom flat. Also and this was how DW talked me into it. My work will hardly ever authorise holidays in the summer and we feel the caravan will extend the season for us. I'm going to give the caravan a good service this weekend and hopefully get away a couple of days the week after next.
So here's hoping I enjoy it I must say though I'm not 100% convinced. Any thoughts from others who have switched would be welcome. Also any ridicule understood and accepted 😳

Variety is a good thing, we love camping but we also love cottage holidays. The good thing about camping is it's so affordable we can afford to do at least one cottage holiday a year too. The biggest problem is my DH doesn't get enough holidays, compared to me!

Keep the gear, you may be ready for another change in the future.

I agree entirely that variety is a good thing. Weve done it all- tents, trailer tent, caravans (seasonal and touring), motorhome, campervan, statics, cabins and holiday cottages, seaside holidays home and abroad, city breaks home and abroad. I have loved them all and changed unit according to circumstances/notion. Biggest mistake was selling everything each time I wanted a change. Could have saved a fortune if I had held onto to a lot of the stuff.

Nowadays we dont stick to one or the other. We have a seasonal pitch for our caravan on a site we love and have only recently decided to update all our camping gear so we can still have a change of scenery when we fancy it. I'm now considering tent camping abroad again next year after having a 10 day holiday in New York last year. Bottom line, there is nothing wrong with a change and plenty good in a bit of pick and mix.

Welcome back to camping lol.

I fully intend to combine tenting with statics and lodges. Although this year will be the first time in a number of years we have actually camped. Since about 2009 we have used either statics, lodges or cottages.

This year we have 2 camping holidays, 2 cottage holidays and 4 weekend hotel breaks across the year - love variety! On the downside our kids, now both adults with partners and working, don't spend as much time holidaying with us but I guess that's just the way things progress.

I would also add that all our holidays\breaks cost less altogether than some of my friends 2 weeks abroad!!

Thanks for the replys, I think variety is the perfect way forward for us, we have two camping trips booked for me my wife and the younger two, a caravan holiday for all six of us, and a whitby hotel long weekend for just the two of us, hopefully a couple more camping weekends thrown in too. So lots of differnent holidays to look forward too. And these definitely cost less than a fortnight abroad, cheers. Gaz

We do log cabin with hot tub every February, then camp at Easter, often Whit, then summer. In November we always use a camping pod. And we might throw an aprtment in for a weekend this year as well.
