Hi, I too have had a hip replacement and live with a rheumatic condition but refuse to give up camping. with regards to getting up and down from sleeping mat I use a good quality gardeners kneeling frame with hand grips and for my porta potti made a stand from a piece of thick MDF board the same size as the toilet base (with a piece of flat beading round the edge to prevent the loo slipping)to which I simply fitted 4 plastic adjustable feet like you use on kitchen cabinets. This not only raises the loo but lets you level it too making it more comfortable and far easier to use.
Booked going on Thursday. Just rang Mum and told her we are booked in and it is up to her based on weather if she comes. Her reply. " If it is booked I am coming" she was 84 last week when I told my son what she said he said "that's my Grandma"
Brilliant - have a great time - I had a hip replacement and carried on with the camping lark, just tell mum to be careful especially if tired when entering and leaving the bedrooms if there is a raised front (bathtub groundsheet) as I hadn't lifted my foot high enough and went flying into the bedroom, then flying out of it onto the kitchen units etc - Glad to say no damage but it was a bit scary to say the least (its something to do with there being a slight difference in leg length and when tired apparantly).
We are back When my husband asked Mum how it was she said "Brilliant." The only mishap was this morning, I got back from the toilets and my son instantly said "Grandma fell." She had tripped on the entrance to the bedroom pod and couldn't get up. My son had helped her up and she insisted that she was fine. Pictures to follow at some point
I've only just noticed this thread, how wonderful I'm so glad your Mum got to go and enjoyed herself, hope she doesn't have any after effects from falling.
I told my daughter about it and she said 'we're going to be doing this with you aren't we Mum?' Haha, she knows me well
Only just seen this thread after coming over from your camping with Mum thread purplebean..So pleased your Mum enjoyed her camping trip..and hope she didnt do any damage to her new hip when she tripped..Sadly my Dad that Geoff was saying had just had a hip replacement died 2 weeks after the op from pneumonia..he was high risk.. but a risk he wanted to take as he couldnt stand the pain any more..the Dr said after the op that he had good movement in his new hip..but sadly he never got to try it out..apart from a fewsteps in the hospital. Its so lovely to hear your Mums story..Im sure she will get more confident on her hip as time goes by..lovely seeing your photos and reading this thread..My Dad was 93 by the way so he had a long good life..Hes chasing my Mum about up there now..shes been waiting for him for 31 years.
------------- Camping Tip #26: In an emergency, a drawstring from a parka hood can be used to strangle a snoring tent friend...or husband!!
Wendy I am really sorry to hear about your Father. I know my Mum said she was in so much pain she was prepared to take whatever risk there was. I hope he is having a whale of a time with your Mum.
