For backpacking I decant everything into small bottles or plastic bottle "Preforms"(The original size of the bottle before the are blown into the size and shape you see in the shops)hard wearing and robust enough so I know they wont break or puncture....

Have found they give me enough of everything even over a long weekend and just top them up or refill at some point between trips....I have a small flip top plastic container again which holds enough toothpaste to do me for the trip....Have even been known to cut a bar of soap in half to save space and weight in my pack...

Tea bags/coffee/ sugar etc are also decanted into any reusable container with a flip/screwable lid to keep them dry and usable...

Might seem extreme....But believe me...Every little helps when your carrying it all on your back and on a trolly....

Jelboy.

I buy sachets of mayo, coffee, etc. online, now my local supplier has gone - no supermarket near us so have been decanting stuff for years. Never had a leak from the bottles and a permanent marker identifies contents.

Decanted for years, doesn't take long, plus after years of camping got the exact bottles, jars etc., never had a spill or leakage. And, as ficklejade said, a permanent marker to identify works well. At the end of the season the contents either get chucked or put back and the bottles etc. washed ready for the start of the new spring/summer season.
For shampoos etc., just keep topping them up from time to time, no probs! At the end of the season use them up.
p.s. We do have a tiny Fairy Bottle, Cif bottle etc from years ago. Yes, they did do sample bottles then! It is amazing what you can accumulate if you have a good idea of what you may or may not need! (I have a drawer full to exploding!!!!!!!!!!!)

Just buy a small bottle of say Tomato sauce and finish it up indoors when you get home, probably works out cheaper than buying the sachets.
I always buy normal size washing up liquid as it then lasts the season.
I keep a bag of staple food ready for the next trip checking they will be in date etc. and then just return them to my cupboards at the end of the season.

I did manage to find aback of 20 'sheets' for washing clothes. A bit like tumble dryer sheets but you put them n a wash instead of powder/liquid. They might be rubbish but they take up next to no space and they cost pennies in home bargains.
