Thank you for all your replies,it hasn't altered that much really over the years then.Even years ago I wouldn't leave anything valuable hanging around but I used to padlock the tent but reading a few of the comments on here a lot dont which makes sense as its telling people your out.I will be looking forward to doing our first camp trip next year after 20 years and taking all on board what was said through out the comments thank you.

We were on a nice family site this summer in Saumur.
Two tents beside us were robbed with the occupants inside asleep at the time.

They were opened with a knife. A quick glance in and steal the handbag or what ever was near at hand. They ransacked the two handbags and took the cash before making off.
Nobody heard a thing!

One of the tents was very small. They must have been very close to the action.

That's sad to hear that somebody can come along and totally ruin your Holiday.Even at night it best to put all your high risk stuff in the boot of your car knowing it would be a lot safer than being left in the tent.

Been camping for many years, only things I've had nicked is by foxes, be warned they're cunning little buggers.

Have always camped with the theory of never leaving anything in the tent valuable, just in case the foxes decide an Ipad/camera would be more fun than food.

We've never had anything taken and to be honest we sometimes forget and leave stuff in the tent, tablets or phones and have so far been ok. we wonder off to loo's with the front of the tent open too. inviting trouble but we haven't had a problem.

Like others say good neighbours are a godsend

We did have a woman who had a purse stolen, she left it on top of the washing machine in the toilets, there were only about 10 tents on the site, and it was very uncomfortable because it must have been one of us. wouldn't like to go through that again, that was 10yrs ago in the UK.

do you think or heard if it was other campers on the site or people coming onto the site to steal?

which site was it? ( id like to avoid if it was likely to be local thieves knowing about the site being an easy target )

It was people who came on site during the night.
No-one heard a thing, even the people in the tents that were robbed.
I guess you are on the outside, slash the tent. Wait. Peer in with a low light torch, reach in and grab the goods.
If you are disturbed you have loads of time to make good your escape before anyone can get near you.

Police said "it happens ..... "

I think it could happen anywhere.

We had a nefarious squirrel help himself to a couple of apples and some bread in Yorkshire a few years ago, and a badger tried to get at a jar of dry dog food at Hayfield.

The dog was rather cross about the latter, and wanted to give chase. Thankfully, she was on the lead, the badger would have made mincemeat of her.

I've never had anything stolen during a lifetime of camping but I don't hold with the idea that 'neighbours will keep an eye out for you'. On a couple of occasions I've been camping alone and at the end of the week my husband has turned up while I've been away from the tent and started to pack up and load things into his car. No one has said a dicky bird to him, and these are people I've camped alongside and chatted to all week!

That's fantastic... from so little info, you can deduce that the chicken wasn't cooked properly... Oh wait...
