Hire a small van a Transit Courier will suffice.

Just check with the site first... a good number don't accept "commercial vehicles", even non-sign written vans.

That's worthwhile knowing, we were thinking of hiring a small van next trip as it would be cheaper than a large estate, something like the peugeot partner the royal mail vans are nowadays. Never even entered my head that campsites might be snobbish about them.

We started camping with a vauxhall astravan. Car size, but still a van, albeit not sign written. I checked first with every site, and never had a problem, even though some of them had it in their T&C's.
But it has been mentioned on these forums over the years, so always worth checking with the site first, for your own peace of mind.
I suspect, rightly or wrongly, that some of these sites have it in their T&C's in the same way that some say no Hobby's, no Twin axles, or no groups. It gives them the chance to turn folk away, if they don't like the look of them!

This post has highlighted the problems which are going to crop up as electric powered cars start to become the norm. Its going to effect the way we all camp. Eventually it will be impossible to hire a petrol/diesel car to lug all the gear around.

I shouldn't worry too much about that, they're already running hybrid busses and designs for electric lorries are in prototype form. There's nothing inherent in the electric motor which says it can't manage loads, it's just that it's not where the market started. Electric trains manage just fine, as the battery tech improves so will the hauling ability of EVs.

We hire a car when we go to the South of France due to limited timescales and distance we didn't want to spend half the holiday travelling so it's flights and car hire with a bag for clothes and 1 for tent and gear. It works for us and is cheaper than hiring on site accommodation. Plus we use our own tent and sleep in our own beds so to speak.

Cheers

We used to have a VW Caddy Maxilife - 7 seats, wth the last row removed very big boot. Seen them as hire vehicles before so might be worth looking at - as big as a van but does not look like a commercial vehicle.

Yep, I am kinda in the same boat, the firm I work for has moved from 2 year lease cars to a long term hire contract, so I am currently driving a BMW Series 1 automatic petrol, which gets replaced every 4 months, so adding a tow bar is really not an option.

As luck would have it the hire firm also does "Ford Transit Custom 300 L1 diesel 2lt TDCi 130ps low roof with air con".

I need to put a request in to get the Transit for our July trip to France, the situation is not ideal, but there is no chance I can get all our kit into the icle beamer.

The Transit is just under 2m in height, so I guess the autoroute tolls will be at the Class 1 car rate, need to check that unless others know.

Also ferry cost Dover-Dunkerque will be more than regular car, but maybe about the same as car + trailer which I normally pay.

All work in progress, and going to the South of France in a van will be a first for me, but needs must.
