We started camping with a vauxhall astravan. Car size, but still a van, albeit not sign written. I checked first with every site, and never had a problem, even though some of them had it in their T&C's.
But it has been mentioned on these forums over the years, so always worth checking with the site first, for your own peace of mind.
I suspect, rightly or wrongly, that some of these sites have it in their T&C's in the same way that some say no Hobby's, no Twin axles, or no groups. It gives them the chance to turn folk away, if they don't like the look of them!

Yep, I am kinda in the same boat, the firm I work for has moved from 2 year lease cars to a long term hire contract, so I am currently driving a BMW Series 1 automatic petrol, which gets replaced every 4 months, so adding a tow bar is really not an option.
As luck would have it the hire firm also does "Ford Transit Custom 300 L1 diesel 2lt TDCi 130ps low roof with air con".
I need to put a request in to get the Transit for our July trip to France, the situation is not ideal, but there is no chance I can get all our kit into the icle beamer.
The Transit is just under 2m in height, so I guess the autoroute tolls will be at the Class 1 car rate, need to check that unless others know.
Also ferry cost Dover-Dunkerque will be more than regular car, but maybe about the same as car + trailer which I normally pay.
All work in progress, and going to the South of France in a van will be a first for me, but needs must.
