I think the whole thing seems to depend on how much you want/need to spend. I have used our nearest GO store (about 6 miles away) a few times just for small items, but I have looked at their prices and found that often their "discount" prices are only what I can buy the same thing for elsewhere. For me the £5 annually for a "discount" card would simply be a waste of money, but for others this may not be so. Just depends how much you need to buy.

Colin

The card thing is simply great marketing - to get them they need yor personal details which means they can gather your shopping data, send you tailored emails etc. On top of which the card on your key ring continually reminds you the shop is there so I bet there's a percentage of visits from folks just finding something to do.
On top of which - again - they are big fun stores a visit of a weekend you can tell some have taken their kids cos it's fun for them.
Obviously buying from a big chain like GO you are selling out to the Man on exactly the way you betray small shops by going to tesco.
Most of our stuff comes from GO, and one if our tents is a vango icarus in a GO exclusive version. I wouldn't have bought the normal version - it's not as good for what we need.

You have hit the nail on the head Mitchamitri, it's all about marketing. I am one of those people who only ever goes into a shop (any shop) to buy something specific that I need. I just don't "do" the "shopping experience" thing. I'm sure the big stores hate people like me.

furthermore (As I've just been reminded!)...

Don't think you need to renew (for a fiver) on the same date each year (or have to back date it).
We originally signed up in June 2012, but ours now runs out in October, so clearly at some stage, we failed to shop/purchase anything between the expiry in June, and the following October, which then became the start of the renewed year.

Also, by holding back on renewal (either deliberately, stubbornly, or merely because you don't need anything), from our experience certainly for last year (if not previous years?), and again today, we get a letter through the post kindly reminding us our card has now expired, inviting us to renew, and as a final bonus, offering us a voucher for £5 off if we spend £25, (offer ends 11/11). So effectively, if we do spend that amount in there before that date, our renewal will be free!

Yes, I know we probably don't NEED anything, and yes, to take advantage of this, we'd need to spend £25, but for those of you who are as outdoorsy/fit/healthy/adventurous as us, it's quite easy to spend £25 on a few pairs of decent winter walking socks (for example) if nothing else. It's not like they'll go to waste!

We'll almost certainly be renewing tomorrow then... and wear our new hiking socks on Sunday! Smashing!

Not a bad life, is it!

Precisely... and was what I was hinting at in my first paragraph above.

Anyway, we've renewed with that fiver voucher we got, and although we didn't bother with new hiking socks in the end (which would have got used, but not exactly needed), Muckerette now has yet another summer dress that she can both hike or cycle in (which she didn't exactly need, but will get used! ) LOL !

They never reminded me when my card expired about 3 years ago and sent me a £5 voucher. Do you think I should remind them to remind me?

If you know a friend who has a Go card just give them their postcode at the checkout to get the discounted price.

I live in a cul-de-sac and four couples take it in turns 'buying' the card, then we all use that house number and postcode (postcode is the same obvs)

Works every time.

Yes, the "Sorry, I forgot my card" works every time with just the name and postcode.
Also, there's no photo ID or anything, so borrowing the actual card from a friend/neighbour.relative works too.

Good idea to "share"!

Why not use the voucher to renew your discount card?
