He was out of order with an approach like that!
Snoring is difficult to control, as is keeping a baby/toddler quiet. Less so for school-age kids, but their excitement is understandable, even if it is still early!
His approach would have been more understandable for loud music/late-night laughing/loud groups talking etc.
Off the top of my head, I've been woken and/or kept awake by a gurgling baby, soon accompanied by mum singing Bob the Builder... in Dutch! OK, it was 3am feeding time, and the singing was as quiet as she could manage, so we put that down as unexpected entertainment!
Others have included snoring (both from our tent, and others!), hooting owls, zips, those damn bloody pigeons at dawn (cooing AND flapping in the trees above us!), barking/yapping/whining dogs, zips, children being "poorly" (and the ensuing scuffling of the parents cleaning up/changing bedding etc!), folk jogging to the loo on the gravel paths (grass is so much quieter, folks!) foxes, zips, screeching badgers, early morning mooing and neighing, zips, and of course various weather related elements.
Did I mention zips?
I don't always use them, but I ALWAYS take earplugs, just in case!
At best, I would put this one episode behind you, and put it down to him being a complete ar5ehole!
At worst, maybe consider something of this nature... as it say's "You have been warned"!
*Just remember "nearby" is one word... no need for one to drop standards, just because one snores!
