I had the stick on sunshades, or roller blinds, when my children were young. For a relatively cheap outlay they do cut out sun heat. We now use the roller blinds in our conservatory and the same is true there. Even a tea towel trapped in a window can help, but not for driving of course.

Curious about this - I have wind deflectors on my car windows and my dog wasn't affected by the noise. And there was nothing wrong with his hearing, either. Okay, you need to adjust for wind strength/direction but they do allow air flow.

Well, just went down to Halfords to get my air conditioning checked, to see if they could top it up. Guess what. I have no air conditioning! Just a fan that blows hot/cold air but is absolutely useless on hot days.
Oh well, another note on the new car requirement list

You've saved yourself the cost of the repair then, so not all bad news.

Bofs, I've got a cool mat, and he hates it! He sat down on it, jumped straight up, and started barking at it and trying to bite it. So I use it for my feet now. I'm hoping if I put a sheet over it he might react better

We thought our cool mat was a waste of time till this holiday when (with temperatures in the 30s) the dog chose to lie on it in the caravan rather than her usual bed. The Cool Coat is a definite recommendation though - keeps her much cooler than without it.

Pets at Home sell the cool coats.

Could you put your dog on the back seat instead of in the boot? Pets at Home sell car harnesses too. I have this “thing” about the safety of dogs in the boot in a rear end shunt.

I’m sure you have water available for your dog during the journey, but we use a non-spill bowl from RoadRefresher (we got ours from The Range but you can get them online too) - which really is non-spill and holds loads. It means the dog can get a drink whenever she wants rather than when we stop - or means she doesn’t tip her water bowl over in the back of the car!

Hi

Our dog travels in the back seat so she has lots of room. We open both windows about 2 inch and the noise is quite low. we have a seat cover like the one in the link and harness.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Waterproof-Car-Hammock-Seat-Cover/dp/B006E0R8EQ/ref=asc_df_B006E0R8EQ/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309842998506&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2773183980360422307&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9046611&hvtargid=pla-562851830569&psc=1

The boot may feel to closed in for the dog in hot weather and air flow is also restricted to.

Hi, Buddy travels in the boot, because whatever harness/barrier I have he can get through, and I don't think driving down the road with a 20kg on my lap is a good idea

He's always been fine traveling in the boot, he cwtches down and goes to sleep. The only problem we have is that the way to go on the motorway is the same as the way to the vets. Once we're past there he's fine.

I don't have water in the boot for him, he won't touch it. I stop after an hour driving to let us both have a walk and a drink. He gets carsick if he eats, or drinks too much. I think he's learned by now that too much in his belly equals vomit everywhere. Before anyone says anything, I'll point out that I leave the house at 6, and I'm down in Tenby by 8:30, stopping for half an hour, where he has a little drink, so he has a quick walk there, then a drink and his breakfast.

I've got the cool mat in the boot on his bed, and I've got 2 fans on order, one for me and one for him. Saturday we're off down Halfords and Pets at Home to look for blinds and a cool coat/collar. The only problem I can see with getting a coat for him is that he's a lurcher. He's usually too skinny for regular dog coats, but a bit too bulky for whippet coats. And before anyone says velcro straps, the ones across the chest usually adjust fine, but the ones that go in front of his hind legs usually end up with the coat getting wrapped right around his crotch and straps dangling everywhere. There's a reason why I custom order his winter coats.

Hi

Yes it safe for you and then. Got a saluki cross myself and the trouble we have had getting anything to fit her is murder. RAC do a short lead that has a seatbelt buckle on the end. Use with a soft harness is an option

Yeah, I tried one of those. He's still leggy and determined enough too paw me when I'm driving though.

If you're having trouble looking for warm coats/pyjamas, look up Greyhound Monkey. She makes them to order out of fleece. I usually put Buddy in the pyjamas when I'm camping in the cold, he's a very short coated drama queen😅
