Looking at tents became my favorite pastime, thought about Nebraska, but pricey, got factory seconds campus breckenridge deluxe from aspinalls in liverpool, brilliant, three goods size bedrooms and large space for table, telly, playstation, portable heater, chairs in living area, also porch for brewing up possible cooking when the weather gets bad, and when we go camping the weather always gets rough! Only downside for yourselves is that its inner first, having said that, its not a difficult tent to errect.  We paid £170.00

We have a MOntana 6 and it is fantastic so I have to say go for a Monty 12.  Really sturdy, survived two huge thunderstorms in France with no bother at all. Best bit is you can stand up in it even in the bedrooms.

Hmmm decisions decisions. Info is not power!

Monty 12 - worried about the porch pitching problems described elsewhere.

Nebraska XXL - worried about the sheer size and particularly the weight.

SunValley 8 - worried about the draughty vents.

Gelert - worried that the build quality not as good as the Colemans and Outwells.

Brekenridge - not full SIG.

I suppose it's a question of the least of the evils?

I was having a look for a tent for my sister; she is considering this the Khyam Breckenridge Deluxe Tent. In the Outdoor Megastore the description is given as erecting fly first and says as follows;

This is a reprise of the best selling 9-berth dome tent that features 3 x 3 berth sleeping compartments (a bit like the Ark), a large extended porch area and a fully sewn-in groundsheet. The flysheet is double coated, taped seamed Weatherweave 2oz polyester with a hydrostatic head of 3000mm.
The inner is breathable polyester, and the sewn-in groundsheet is polyethylene.
The poles are colour-coded fibreglass with the ring & pin system.
Features include an integral tent tidy, two large panel windows with privacy flaps,
porch side door and a skylight window.

You don`t fancy getting a pup tent for the boys, do you? Then you could concentrate on finding a tent with good living space without a huge footprint. They`re just the right age to like a tent of their own.

No , because they're all good tents! But looking at your original criteria of fly first full SIG, then that knocks out the Gelerts and the Breckenridge. The Nebraska is big and heavy, and you might be short of transport space with a large family and stuff to move anyway. The Sun Valley 8 loses out on living space when the third bedroom is in place, which it would be. So its the Monty 12 then! Easy! Don't worry about the porch, the tent police aren't going to come round witha plumb line and make sure you've got it 100% just so.

Sorted. MT

Our criteria for a replacement-

  • Pitch outer first
  • SIG
  • At least 3 rooms
  • Large living space

Able to withstand the weather in NE Scotland from Easter to October

Not many that fit all of the above, especially SIG and pitchouter first (which from personally expereince, I appreaciate the need for in Scotland).

The Outwells, as already suggested are the usual contenders. One more that comes to mind is the Sunncamp Haven, but I can't remember if it is two vis-a-vis bedrooms pods or three. But it is certainly outter pitch first like the Monty or SV.

Someone might be able to confirm, but you might find the Sunncamp Vario range is also pitched outer first (certinaly the 2006 model now has a full outer attached SIG).

The Vango Aurora 800 DLX is also pitched outer first, and has a full SIG, but again I suspect has only 2 bedrooms of 4+4.

It is was me, I would take the Monty 12, as I suspect, along with the Nebraska, it would be the most stable.

Not seen many users of the Homestead 10 - re Roo and Shirlandy - no pics of the Homestead 10 I noted.  In 30+ camping trips in tha last couple of years including some big tent only sites we have only come across two Homestead 7's and one 5 - which is like a 10 cut in half.  Just endless Vango's.  Really looking forward to seeing a Homestead 10 - perhaps need a specila event!
