We took our 8 week old camping last year. We bought a tommee tippee microwave steriliser to use at home that also doubles as a cold water steriliser and did it twice a day. On our first camping trip, we took a flask to keep warm water for warming bottles in the middle of the night without messing around, but later discovered that she would have them at room temperature which made life easier for subsequent trips. We had a formular dispenser, and just mixed when needed.

She slept in her moses basket when she was little, and had a bath in a washing up bowl. Our daughter has always slept better when she is camping and, although it wasn't easy the first time, it was worth it.

I had some of the best camping when my girls were babies.  All slept very well.   Sterilised botles with milton or took the ready made milk in bottles cow and gate used to do these.  Lovely memories

Hi Craig

Sorry so negative earlier on just can still remember those early weeks even though I have a 6 and 31/2 year old. From memories of juggling two children and trying to keep the older one happy and bond with the new one I think you going off with the four year old sounds a great idea. I think your wife will welcome a bit of one to one with the new one and the four year will love a long weekend with her Dad all to herself. Go for it.

P.S. good luck, let us all know what you have

Roo

hi we went camping most of the summer when my son was born. He was born in june. and my daughter who was 2 at the time. I suppose it was easier as i was breastfeeding. We did have the odd bottle around for if they had a bottle of german fenchel tea. I usually boiled bottles to sterilise as i found tablets made the bottles feel a bit horrible. We went camping to relieve the stress of a new baby, people coming round, the house a tip and a terrible bereavement. so we were a lot less stressed camping. Which i believe usually makes for a less stressed baby. We also had one of those baby pop up cots with lots of blankets underneath. I always use ski suits for sleeping in aswell when camping as my two always kick off the covers.

Little Scamp's first camping trip (one night, to see how it went) was when she was 4 weeks old (we had a folding camper then, so it WAS under canvas - no mains, site with no facilities, just a field with a tap and somewhere to empty the loo!! - it was mid-May).  I was feeding myself, but I used sterilising bags (as described by kayscough, top of page) for dummies, etc, and for bottles when she was a bit older.  Little Scamp's first week camping was when she was 6 weeks old.  She was never a cryer, really, except for food, so if she grizzled during the night I just had to feed her and all was quiet again.

Once your new baby is born, you will have a better idea of how soon you can get away - go with your own gut feelings and don't let the doubting Thomas's put you off if it feels right.  Camping with a young baby can and does work, but only if you are happy with the idea.
