hi steaders

don't go for a small tent you have to crawl into .........crawling is for the young uns not the over 50s.!!! Theres some nice tunnel tents. easy to put up and gives you standing room etc  the Vango 500 you mentioned is a good tent ..........but  by time you have a couple of chairs and a cooker in the living area it would be quiet full.empty tents always look a lot bigger

Keeping warm at night  and getting a good nights sleep is also a good idea look around this site for other peoples ideas of bedding and matTresses etc

hope you have fun what ever you choose

Thanks for all the tips, advice and links to this (most excellent) web site.
Been doing a bit of research and we are probably going to plump for the Vango Venture 500 which seems to be highly regarded and has good reviews.

A good start. Use the gear from home first and go away for the night/weekend. Take plenty of bedding for underneah you, something to make a brew with, (chilled milk in a flask for the first morning), two chairs and a torch. This introduction will give you an idea of what you need, not "want". There is always somewhere you can get food from.
Don't forget the bottle opener.
Jim.

Hiya and welcome to UKCS!

This place will tell you everything you want to know about camping and if you can't see what you need, if you ask someone will surely help, be warned though this site is very addictive!

I have to agree with what others are saying here, go for a tent you can stand up in, it makes life so much easier and it is a real pain trying to get dressed laying down!

Look around tent showrooms/camping shops and ask loads of questions when you are there.

Don't buy loads of stuff for your first trip just in case you don't like it!  Walk around a local campsite during the day and have a peek at tents others have and ask other campers.

You will love this site!
