potato hash.  For four people, 1 onion 4 potatos, tin of corned beef and some gravy granuals (if wanted).

Or make it before you go, freeze it in tuppaware box and keep in cool box instead of one of those ice block things.

I always take a sausage casserole frozen for the first night and we have that with crusty bread.  Its lovely.

 

We also buy tins of curry and chilli and have those with crusty bread too.  I would do rice or tinned potatoes but hubby says thats not camping food.........dont know why, he has funny ideas

Tried last night - Asda Spaghetti Bolognese Packet mix, it the one with soya meat

(about 70p). Just add water and then just before its ready add a can of Baked Beans.

 

Eat with  Spaghetti / pasta or rice.

 

Thought it was pretty good

Don't worry about not having a sink, take a small bucket with you. you can then empty any waste water into that and then dispose of at the waste water grid later. My washing up bowl sits neatly into the top of my bucket so i have an instant wash up station.

As for meal tips

Buy sterilised or UHT milk,  i take several 1 pint sized ones, then if we don't use ist all within a few hours i can throw it away and start a new one (so no need for a cool box)

1.Rice in 5 (batchellers) is excellent it is in packet and cooks realy quick. then in the other pan i heat a tin of chick pea curry from morisons (this is my fave).

 2. Pasta and a jar of seads of change pasta sauce. this can be done in one pan.

3. The veggi bolagnase mix called bean feast is tasty with spaggetti and is really cheap. Cooked this for tea on the shaws of lake grasmere with my trangia yesterday in fact. talk about a meal with a view.

4. 1pint packet soup with crusty bread. or the sachet style seads of change soups and these are really filling.

5. you can buy dehydrated onions which are great to take camping you just add them to a stew or place in hot water to use like fresh.

6 don't forget the old pot noodle. essential for emergency snacks

The straight-to-wok-noodles are handy for stir fries as there's no need to boil them. Just add to stir fried chicken and/or veg and wham in some soy and fish sauce.

When I do a curry I put the rice in with it to make a one pot curry and rice , it's YUMMY !

Hi,

Does the water from the rice not make it a bit starchy?

I only ask cos I've been looking at one pot recipes myself and wondered about cooking rice in the same pot.

I take a (metal - not electric!) steamer with me - cook potatoes etc in the base with water, add a layer and put in any veg you want (carrots, sweetcorn, broccoli etc). You can also add the next layer if wanted. The steamer bit gets used as a colander as well for draining rice/pasta - dual purpose!

I have cooked paella (risotto rice, onions, peas, prawns (taken frozen) and chopped up pepperami). Always goes down well on first night, easy to do. Also done bolognaise with pasta (jar of sauce added to mince), and carbonara (bacon and mushrooms in one pan, pasta in other). Oh also cooked sweet'n'sour chicken - rice in one pan, chicken and jar of sauce in the other.   You get the general idea anyway!

we have a 1 ring porable burner

we take plenty of noodles

curry mixes

like the rest you dont have to slave over a hot cooking stoke

your on holiday so enjoy it

so wot if you have takeout every night

ha ha

Risottos are easy and delcious one pot meals for camping.

We did a Bacon and Msuhroom, and a spicy Tuna Risotto whilst we were away last.

Corned Beef hash is also good plus as other people have said, Stir Fry with the straight to wok noodles.

Also, don't forget your Bacon and Sausage fry up in the morning, mmmmmmmmmmm, just made for camping!

I make bolognaise sauce and freeze it before we go camping. We then have that with pasta on the SECOND night. Having a big frozen block of sauce in the cool box helps keep everything else cool, along with the ice blocks.

We mainly have pasta, sometimes with cheese and bacon. One night is chippie night. We also have sausages. Couscous is also a really good option, as it just needs boiling water poured on it, then leave for 5 mins. It is particulalrly nice with suasages.

In my camping kit, I have dried mixed herbs and chilli powder for jazzing things up!

My hubby particularly likes all the chopping and prepping outdoors - makes him think he's Rick Stein!  We don't use electric so do suffer from keeping things cool, the wine & beers go into a large bowl of water. Most of our food is bought fresh that day or the day before and simple things are the name of the day.

I make a couple of frozen dishes to take in my cool box one for the 1st night and 1 for the 2nd. Usually Spag bol or and a stew. Usually have spag bol the first night heated through with some pasta and beef stew the 2nd night with fresh crusty bread bought that day on site.

I also take a few tins usually tinned stewing steak, beef in beer etc with tinned peas/carrots and tinned potatoes.

In the past we have bought boil in the bag frozen foods (ideal if passing a spar or supermarket in way back to site after a day out). We have had cod in butter/parsley sauce or sliced beef/chicken in gravy. Then add tinned potatoes or small new one and some veg.

Also boil chicken breast fillets or fry off diced chicken and add uncle benns sauce ie sweet and sour, white wine, chassuer etc.  Serve with potatoes, rice or pasta.

We also in weather like this do alot of salads and baguettes with the ready made up sandwich fillers like prawn in cocktail sauce, cheese and onion,etc.  You could make your own simply if you wanted like tuna mayo etc.

Also if your somewhere like devon or cornwall where cream teas are readily available you'll find alot of tea shops will sell take away cream teas.  We take these back to the tent and enjoy them there with a cuppa.

If you have ehu and a small toasted sandwichmaker you can do lots of those - good for using up bread and cheese/ham or anything else you want to use up in fear of the cool box not keeping it all fresh until the next day. You could do them under the grill they just wont be bonded together in the way toastie makers bond them.

My kids eat alot of spahetti on toast,tuna pasta sald and campbells tinned meatballs and pasta when we are awy.

We also have a chippy night and squeeze in a few BBQs to.

Dont forget a few basic kitchen untensils.  I always take a few vegetable knives, a bread knife,a large serving spoon the type with holes in- usueful for draing veg/pasta but not rice. tin opener,meauring jug, extra couple of plates, scissors, wooden spoon and of course a corkscrew and bottle opener.
