"Things I wish I had taken on my first ever camping trip".....the tent pegs!
Having just a very damp weekend camp, my advice is - take layers including a waterproof layer, get everyone trained to take off boots/shoes by tent door and to leave wet layers there, and dry off before going into bedroom. You really need to keep your bedroom and bedding dry as it is impossible to dry everything off if the rain is very persistent. Aim to keep some dry sets of clothes, even if it means putting wet ones back on to go back outside at times.
Look for a pitch that is level as possible ( if you have a choice) and try to work out which direction the wind is (so you can pitch the tent with the smallest most tapered side towards the wind and face your doors away from it...though this is not always possible). Aim to be near natural windbreaks such as trees (but it is not a good idea to pitch right under a tree - high winds can = falling branches and you can get horrid sticky sap and bird poo all over your tent- not nice!!)
And be prepared for dealing with the unexpected by finding the funny side of things!!
