I think most site owners wont bother to you putting a few bits of wood in a bbq or firepit as long as it doesnt burn the grass, i know at dent last weekend we had the firepit set up in the middle of the tents and it was a bit ropey but we had a good bucket of water handy, for the saturday night we just moved to an area away from anything burnable but still had the water handy just in case.

was a godsend as it was very cold

i remember the first times i went camping, it was back in 98' , my boss at the time asked me and a couple of lads if we fancied camping for the night so we went for a laugh, all of the sites we went to were full so we ended up camping on the edge of the cliffs at flamborough head (north yorkshire coast) we "borrowed" some logs from somebodys back garden and made a camp fire, cooked our bean and sausage's in the tin over the fire and got drunk, it was amazing laying outside the tent next to  an open fire watching the world go by.

Just so long as the fire doesn't spark and make nice little holes in the tent canvas! (Very sensible suggestions on here to use those non-sparking logs)

Many years ago, we were camping on Anglesey in our nice new folding camper, when the campsite owner decided to set a fire in the adoining field, to burn his rubbish....okay until the wind changed direction and bits of smouldering debris started landing on the tents! We had to keep batting the roof of the camper to 'bounce' bits off it, whilst other campers went to put out the fire! Not an experience I'd recommend!

but theres nothing wrong with sitting out and having a quiet chat and a beer till 11pm ish is there??????? let me know please as i dont wanna be an anti-social camper,

i dont agree with the noisey ones tho who stay up till daft am and shout loadly not talk quietly, they drive me potty

Depends on where you are I suppose, I still chuckle to myself about a little farm campsite,  went to the loo about 11pm, on the way back inadvertently sneezed - chap shot out of his caravan and shouted at me to keep the noise down, it's 11 o'clock!

well if people near our tent do stay up till daft am keeping me awake my kids always get em back, (2 and 5) as there always up at 6 when were camping and i make sure they wake those noisey gits up, hehe

As much as i love sitting up late with a fire outside the tent, i have to admit i do hate people who stay up, getting drunk and talking loudly, until about three o'clock in the morning. They keep you awake with the noise and worrying that their fire is going to set your tent ablaze.

Don't worry Savvie, I'm always in the sack by one.

To sympathise though, I've no beef with people quietly chatting 'til late - its one of the fun things. But there's a difference between that & acting like you're alone in a field!

I've picked up a Hibachi BBQ grill for £3 from my local Wilkinson's hardwear store, plus £3 for charcoal that'll keep us in BBQs over Easter. Something like that, on a base of some sort, will hold & contain a fire nicely (I know!).

& the best thing is, it's cheap enough to throw away at the end of the camp.

We have found a barbeque bucket to be the answer.

I bought mine a couple of years ago from Milets for about £10 and I think B&Q are doing them this year. Great little things, about 30cm tall and 30cm in diameter and on legs. Once youve cooked your food, remove the grill and add some wood or a duraflame log to the embers.

Alternatively, Argos has a PINK portable barbeque with a smoking dome that could be used in the same way reduced to £15.99
