well we have a second hand frame tent that cost nothing from freecycle, the cooker stand and gas bottle cost £6, the pans cost £8, Cadac £8, sleeping bags for 6 cost £35, single gas stove £4, Double stove with grill £15, Large igloo cool box £12 so my costs have been quite low £98 oh and a tarpaulin(sp) foe £6 so all in just over £100
Camping is only cheap if its you and OH, when kids get involved more creature comforts come into it etc. trying to make home from home!
Although the costs stack up, its over a longer more affordable period. i.e you dont need to get finance to get a tent. Most people who buy a caravan have to get a loan or finance and thats when it gets expensive! Especially for a nice 5 berth van and awning and everything else, and a huge amount of people who package holiday abroad bang it on credit cards which is even more dangerous!
All in all camping still cheapest form of hoilday, but if your like me with my own business "all holidays cost a fortune, I loose turn over, and dont get paid! unlike my staff who I do pay for holidaying!"
The money I use to spend on holidays I could afford to renew everything each year. We only use to go away to France or somewhere in UK. Now we have more hols than before, all been great. No regrets.
Yep can be expensive but like others have said once you've the kit next time round it shouldn't be as bad. But saying that, I've been camping for years in tents then trailer tents (all secondhand) now this year for spring bank I've gone for a nice new Outwell tent and new sleeping bags, then I logged on to this site and read about the utility tents so I've order one of them and then I started to read this thread and read about the elec cookers and now I want one of those too.
And talk about addiction - I've only been log on to this site a few days and I can't get off it - I've been reading info today whilst at work - now I'm suppose to be cleaning the bedroom and I'm back on hear emailing all the other campers!!
You pick up tentastic advice on here! Its great! Most addictive site ive ever been on. I think thats down to the love of camping and so many great people here, most with a cracking sense of humour!
Just done another tenner in ASDA on a couple of decent chairs, oh and a set of 4 plastic wine glasses for a nicker!! It's doing me head in! Everywhere I go I see "stuff" for camping!! AAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHH
It takes over ya brain, I drive past fields during the day and think, hey that would be a great place to camp! Its probably someones garden! I dont know i think I've become a camping anorak!
well if u spend say 1000 on equipment to start off then say 1500 spends for a week away for 5 ppl ( prices are rough estimate for arguement sake) thats wot it wud cost in total for first year the following year would cost site fees of wot approx 200 and spends TOTAL APPROX 4200 FOR 2 YEARS HOLIDAYS
then going away on hols
800 per person thats 4000 for 5 ppl then spends lets say same (tho we know its not ) 1500 total 5500 THIS IS FOR JUST A WEEK AND IS ALLREADY OVER THE PRICE OF CAMPING
IF IT WAS FOR 2 YEARS LIKE CAMPING FIGURES IT WUD COME TO 11000
so camping is actually 5900 less over 2 years which is another 2 years worth of hols give and take the price increases which happen on both hols
and the way our climate is changing the weather here is catching up with other countries
and you dont get any bloody foreigners shoving fake gold/flashy toys/leather handbags/other cheap junk in your face every couple of minutes like u do abroad
(before u say "well tell them NO" )
they seem to forget how to understand english and start showing ur kids so they then start whinging cos this idiot has brainwashed them into believing they are great prezzies for family and friends back home
Have to confess, I got us a tent £90?) as had just bought a house and couldn't afford to go on a 'proper' holiday. We already had chairs/plates/sleeping stuff/mum donated a stove so all we had to buy initially was lighting and some camping pans as I like to cook. BUT having discovered this site I have wanted to buy loads more!! You are bad, bad people... So far stopped at picnic rug, extra mats and a black cat heater (biggest expense), but really want a proper camping kitchen etc etc...
We camped this weekend and cost £22 for 2 of us - looking at a B &B in Sept and will be £220!! If I was clever, I could tell you the mathematical percentage raise... but i think it's pretty high!
Would you rather spend £350.00 on a brand new Monty 6 and enjoy it for many years to come... or.........
Spend £350.00 for 3 nights at Haven site in Easter! on a static that was dirty, surrounded by chavs shouting and wrecking things till the early hours of the morning.
Yes, dumb me did the Haven thing, and I still cringe at the fact!
I hate wasting money and I camping is certainly is not! Even if you only camp every other year its still a bargain.
