missus just had a good idea attach a jingle bell or bells to the inner zipper on all doors then if anyone should try to enter the bells will jingle, and when you want to get out just hold the bell so the bell doesn't jingle so you don't unduly disturb other in your tent.

very usefull at night when you are in!!!

again we have not had problems as yet.

happy camping

All ready been suggested , thats what we're doing but only one bedroom, only worried about nephew getting out.

Security at night never really worries me. But I am worried about going to the VFestival in August (yes, I'm having a midlife crisis and its a girly weekend with a friend . Only cos obviously a festival is a different kettle of fish to an ordinary campsite.

never really had an issue with tent security. For a start you are camped with like  minded people, and tend to look out for your neighbours.

Also during the day while you are out, there are usualy some familys still on site throughout the day, and i know when we are on site, if you see someone acting suspicous around someone else's tent you will tend to notice.

Its great reading through these posts.

Firstly site selections goes a good way to ensure security as much as anything. We always check the reviews first, looking for careful and caring site owners.

Secondly, the vast majority of campers will look out for your gear rather than try pinching it and they will also be able to identify people who do not belong on site (newcomers easily identified by the packed car.)

Thirdly, I keep a sharp knife nearby at night to enable a fast exit as it is quicker than messing trying to find the zip.

Fourthly we do not take anything of great value with us (don't need the DVD player or TV) so unless the thieves are into camping they wont find much of any nuse to them anyway)

So its a combination of things that keep you and your gear safe when you're on site.

I know a lot of this has been mentioned before but I thought I would put it all together as welll and endorse it all

We only go camping to see what we have forgotten and what we need to get for next time. If only we could remember where we put the list..................

Anybody take a simple battery powered smoke alarm?. I don't, but reading this and what with butane gas and citronella tea lights about (we camp in scotland and the midges don't seem to like citronella and no we don't leave them in the tent or lit :-) ) we may take one next time. They are only a fiver and could save a life. Is this a flawed suggestion? Can anyone see an issue with it?

My only concern would be that a tent would burn that fast a smoke alarm may be of no use. Also I would not know if a tent would give off enough smoke to set alarm off ?

We've only used the padlocks when we've gone out for the day (never when on site).  A friend who's camped for years recommended getting them for our porch because we store our bikes, stove etc. in it when out and were due to camp on a site that allowed day visitors.

Obviously, someone who really wants to get into your tent will find a way (slash sides etc.). However, theives can be of the pre-meditated or opportunistic variety and if the £3 outlay acts as a deterent to even one opportunist I'm happy to spend it -pre-meditated slashing of a tent is far more likely to attract attention with the neighbours than just walking in.

I still think padlocks just show you have something inside your tent that is worth pinching and really are as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike

I agree with msty, just show you have something to hide.  We have never had anything stolen off us while camping.

Fair point -they won't stop a determined thief, but I'm not talking whopping great big padlocks here just little (and very discrete) ones.  Many of us have burglar alarms for our houses and most (I hope!) have locks on our doors -isn't this tantamount to the same thing?  They don't stop the determined thief either, but certainly make them look suspicious to anyone who happens to be around!

We'll carry on securing our door on sites that allow day visitors (not on standard sites though).  I still reckon £3 outlay was worthwhile even if noboby else does -so there!
