I've never had a delta split, although a couple have bent and twisted along the shaft where I've hammered them into hard or stony ground.
I've had in mind to upgrade to metal ones at some time. I actually though that the metal ones would be bigger and more awkward to store but Liddenham's post has educated me otherwise.
