I have heard of people having "chicken pox parties" where parents go to a friends house because their children have caught chicken pox and they want their own children to get the immunity early in life, rather than to risk the complicated versions later on.

I had one of those for my daughter when she was 2 and had contracted chicken pox. We have never been so popular!! I must have had 30 children in the house over a period of 24 hours!!

As for camping, By the sound of it, your daughter will no longer be contagous or particularly spotty by monday so I would say .. use the precautions you have (ie the blow up bath and porta potty) go on your holiday, enjoy your well earned rest and have a lovely time.

I hope the weather stays nice for you

Hi Kirsty, thanks for asking after Ruby, well she hasn't got anymore spots, so I am not even sure if she has chickenpox now? I think I just panicked because my sister told me my niece had them, then I noticed one little spot and panicked because we are going away.

I am still going to keep checking over the weekend, but fingers crossed, she hasn't got them anyway and we'll have a great time next week (so long as the weather stays good)!

Claire

Don't have anything to add except sympathy as we have had same prob in our house(luckily for us we are not going away til sunday week so should be ok) 6 year old son missed last week of school & we had to postpone his birthday party due to chickenpox, now 16 year old has it (He's not happy cos I told him he had already had it!, I really thought he had !!) He isn't coming on holiday with us (Doesn't like camping) so is staying with his dad,he can be nurse for a bit if he's still poorly! hope you get your holiday, good luck.

Just because your son has had it before doesn't mean he won't get it again either. My daughter had chicken pox 4 times and measles once (even though she had her immunisation), and my other daughter was 4 weeks old when the others had it and she caught it too, even though I was breastfeeding.

Sometimes they can be really miserable with it, and maybe better off at home.

A similar problem has just 'come up' for us! Our 4 year old daughter developed the first spots on Tuesday night, we are going on our first camping trip next Thursday.

Although she should be fine by then, we also have a 2 year old daughter and I have never had chicken pox.

So, our problem is: If my 2 year old has caught it (and me) the spots may not appear for another 2 weeks, but may appear while we are away - the incubation period is 11-21 days.

We really don't know what to do, do we just go and just hope she doesn't get poorly or just not go?  I'm torn!

Hi Wydeee,
I'm so sorry, how frustrating for you. I don't really have any ideas other than to wait and see, but as you say the 2 year old could come out in spots at any time.

Well, still no more spots, so i looks like we are fine to go. I have just checked the weather report and that  looks good too! I can't wait to go now, i'm going to go through my check list later and get last minute things this afternoon, pack the car tomorrow night and were off first thing monday

And Wydeee, I hope you'll all be fine and still be able to go, I know how disappointing it's been for us this week, thinking should we go or not! Fingers crossed!

Claire

Well, I think we will plan to go. It's only about 1 1/2 hours drive at most if worst happens.  My main worry is that Livvie was in so much pain for the first 2 days, hopefully if Maddie does get it she wont be as bad!  Fingers crossed
