Sorry, but I can't stay silent any longer. Why on earth would you want to take a tv when you're going camping? Forget about everyday luxuries and camp as camping should be, basic and peaceful.

Hi steempro.
I agree 100% with the peaceful bit. But can not for the life in me think why camping should be basic, unless you are punishing yourself for some reason,
If you like to live like monk then you have every right to, but you have no right to say to other campers they should. Modern camping in modern camp site give people a choice to camp with all the Items they deem necessary for their family to enjoy their holiday, alternatly I you are lucky enough to go out into the Scottish highland with your tent and equipment on your back, then that is the place for basic camping well in my opinion it is.

The only thing we take for entertainment is our DAB radio. Its brilliant for the morning news and the weather forecasts etc. Wouldnt take a tv with us, we're there to enjoy the starry nights and beautiful scenery.   Good for those who do though! A holiday is what you personally want to make it.

The one piece of kit that I take everywhere (not just camping trips) is my archos. It plays MP3s, and movies and I plug it into the telly and record programmes to watch at a later date. All this and it fits in my pocket too!! www.archos.com

We take an archos too.  We use it for storing photos so we can empty our memory cards in the cameras, but it is a really versatile bit of kit.

If you want to hear something worse than TVs in tents, my husband had a small TV and play station in his car!   Obviously, he doesn't use it when driving along.  He has a Japanese import (car)and goes to loads of car shows so it is for playing at driving fast cars around race tracks when not actually driving fast cars around race tracks.  Or something like that. Not sure I really grasp the concept myself, but boys will be boys.  Well some of them anyway.

Maxylou.

If you have a laptop you can get a small usb dongle that'll give you freeview and use your laptop's hard disk as a recorder, they cost about £30 and your laptop will take up a lot less space than a TV plus lots of sites are now going WIFI, this will give you all sorts of other options like C4's anytime TV etc, the down side is reception, most of the sites I have been to the reception is lousy on anything but a digital aerial, the set top aerials are no good you will need to invest in a strong reception digi aerial these can be expensive and are difficult to transport all the prongs sticking out can interfere with other stuff. The choice is yours however, goodluck.

I agree in terms of telling other folks what to do but just had to say that I do feel that comparing not taking a TV camping to "living like a monk" may be overstating the case a tad! It's just a TV and is an entertainment tool, not something essential to comfort. Deep breaths all round!

Hi,

You can buy a portable, flat TV (7 inches) from Tesco. £39  reduced from 49!

I got one last weekend.  You can plug an arial into the side, it has a built in rechargable battery but can also run on mains.

Got one ourselves, it was less than £23 with postage from Ebay, works an absolute treat giving radio stations as well. Whilst in St Minver, Cornwall it found a very good signal indeed (67 Stations !!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I take mine cos I actually like to watch Sky news just to keep up to date with what's going on.

We keep the volume down for the 30 minutes or so that it's on and never had any complaints to date.

I would never knock somebody for taking their TV on holiday, provided that they don't disturb others with it.   It's not something I do - but each to his own.  OK you will get those that have them on so the whole of the site knows what's going on in EastEnders, but then again you have those that have their car radios on so that the rest of the site can hear.
I always take a portable DVD player with me, which is only used as a last resort, and believe me there have been a couple of occasions when I have been very grateful for it, as a means of keeping the kids amused when the weather was foul.
We always keep the volume down so that the neighbours aren't treated to a free listening of Lilo and Stitch.

Yes, and thats what it's all about, freedom of personal choice and consideration for others.
