Spot on owlish

Plus I'd just add that you must communicate in THEIR language (most of the time, anyway). If you've not watched the Dog Whisperer yet, I'd certainly recommend it

I would never use a water spray on my dog i try to distract him and then reward which i find works so much better than a shock

I've taken two dogs camping this year, one being only 4 months old at the time. I have had to buy a new tent with a SIG because they kept trying to "escape". A dog stake and flexi lead were invaluable just to give them some space. The rest is common sense.

Mine slept with me, and I had to keep moving the pup off the air bed! She obviuosly likes her comfort.

Well we've had Bailey a week now and he's settled in really, really well.  He's well behaved (most of the time), housetrained and very playful, verging on mental at times.  Oh, and he can eat for England!!

We take a folding crate for our dogs so we can shut them in the tent if we have to during bad weather or anything. Ours are a small breed, so a crate big enough for the pair of them doesn't take up too much room, and we put a small sheet of ply on top (fits inside the crate when it's folded up) so it becomes a very useful place to put things too. (OH talked briefly about making a set of folding shelves to fit on top of it I pointed out that it was in danger of becoming a Welsh dresser with dog strage beneath, and vetoed it.)

Could I just ask people not to leave dogs tethered on flexis or long lines while they've all gone off to shower or whatever? Twice this year I've had to untangle dogs who'd got into the most fearful mess with their long lines. One young lab was in danger of throttling himself, he was trying so hard to pull tangled flexi lead off his legs, it was tightening round his neck.

We use a running line along the ground, goign through the loop of their leads, and tethered at either end with a dog stay. We have easy-hitch leads, where the loop unclips, but you can achieve the same result by running the lead under the line and joining the loop to the rest of the lead with a carabiner. Just as much freedom, but safer if you're going to leave them on their own for a few minutes now and then.

I agree with you both.

We were told to use one at puppy classes and the little s**t just thought it was a great game and tried to "bite" the water. The trainer didn't believe us when we said it didn't work. I don't think she'd ever met a terrier, certainly not one as bloody-minded  as our boy.

we take our westie camping and she sleeps in her cage with her bed inside the same as at home.  We take her everywhere during the day which does restrict but that is one of the sacrifices you accept before deciding to be a dog owner.  We have found cornwall to be very doggy friendly with many beaches having an all year dog friendly section, normally further along to walk which is great for the dog and best of all away from the crowds!

One thing I would say is make sure your dog is safely secured when travelling in the car.  I have seen so many dogs in cars that are so loaded up that they are basically perched on the front passenger and dash board!  Surely they deserve to be as safe as the other passengers and not only that some dogs weigh as much as an adult and I wouldn't want that hurtling at the back of my head!  We are extremely loaded up even with a trailer but our dog travels on the middle seat between the kids.  She has her bed sideways on and is then strapped in to the seatbelt with her harness.
