Camping over Whitsun at Blue Hills (near St Ives) for one week, family of four, with electric and a large tent works out at about £70 for us.

There are still cheap sites about but as camping becomes more popular (I guess people are cutting back) we'll see less of them about. It makes me worry what will happen when we see the inevitable crash in the number of people camping.

I think the cost of holidays has gotten completely out of hand and there is some real gouging going on with the pricing of holidays during the school holidays. It wasn't that long ago I took the family to Florida for two weeks and did all of the big amusement parks (including Disney) for about £2.5K, now the same holiday at the same time costs nearly £5K. Centre Parcs is as bad, we used to get a 3 bed villa for about £300 (after discount) now we are lucky to match that going out of school holidays as it would be nearer £800 inside school holidays.

Totally agree about the school holidays thing. Puts parents in an very difficult position. I think the government should tax the extra charged at 100% and plough the money back into education.

I love Fisherground near Eskdale, it`s a lovely site, but basic. It has a pond and play area for kids and of course it allows campfires, but at £17.50 a night, £20.50 if you want EHU, (£5 per adult, £2.50 per child and £2.50 per car) we don`t go often. It annoys me even more that they charge 50p each for a shower, so a family of four with EHU and wanting a shower each night/day it`s £22.50 a night. You have to shower and wash your hair each day as well, because you smell of smoke from the campfires.

Over a week that`s £157.50 with EHU at Fisherground and I have found the same site in York as Mature Student, I told her about it actually lol, and that`s only £84 a week with EHU and free showers. I have also found a site near Tenby in Wales, that is £99.40 a week with EHU in August. So you can now see why we don`t visit Fisherground often as nice as it is! If we want to go to Eskdale we use the C&CC site just down the road from Fisherground, flat pitches, beautiful modern free showers, inside pot wash area, huge trampoline for the kids and a play area and cheaper per night, plus you can save points for free nights.

I agree totally with beezers!!

I've never been to fisherground but have looked at it a few times and the reviews sound fantastic but the price just puts me off completely!!  Especially when as she says thee is Eskdale c&cc site just down the road thats cheaper with lovely facilities and lovely people running it and free showers!!

As I said I like Fisherground, but it costs 2.50 a night to have your car on site, that`s 17.50 a week, which I think is a bit steep.

I can't believe the price some sites charge!!

We went to Conwy touring Park year before last in May school holidays, now most schools have 1 week off, mine on the other hand have two off. So we booked for the second week (when most had gone back). We knew it would be quiet hehe

It cost us just £4.75pn for up to 6 people on the pitch, So for the 5nts we paid...£23.75..... because it was classed as low season.

Also we had the whole section to ourselves it was absolutely brilliant, kids had all the room they could need for scooting and playing football. To top it off we had a heatwave whilst there, (the following week rained)

On site the clubhouse and play area was closed (didn't worry us) and they had free hot showers and free freezer for ice blocks...

I hope they don't read this and change the pricing structure as we are planning to go again this year.....

It's rediculous what some of the sites charge for. It shouldn't matter if you're in a tent or a caravan, we should only be charged for the pitch and that fee should reflect the area and amenities. I understand prices going up for holidays, every country does that but I'm sick of having to pay more if you have a tent with 6 berths or more or it's over a certain size yet a caravan can have a huge awning up and not be charged extra.

There were some sites we stayed at in the States and paid 40 USD and that was for 4 adults and a child with hookups. And that's another thing, children go free in the states. Our children are considered children until the age of 18 when they are considered adults yet we pay more for our children over the age of 12 than my 3 year old. Neither does more than the other or has special access to more fun. So why charge more? And I love the family of 4 charge here until I read the small print and again, it only covers children 12 and under. It's not like there is a free buffet or something and if that was the case, my 3 year old would eat more than my teenager. One pitch fee should cover everything on the site.

Mamabear I think you'll find that a lot of sites now do charge for an awning as well as the caravan, plus all the extras a tenter has to pay, this is why we go to sites that charge a set price for the pitch without all the extras, so no-one is penalised for whatever their outfit is

We spent a week in October at a site 6 miles from York at £10 a night. Loos were basic but clean.

Price is same all year round, so we booked for two weeks this July/August. Site owner apologised as, sorry, he'd had to raise his prices to £12 pn including electric hook up; no pp or awning charges, just one set rate!
Is this Home Farm at Stillingfleet?? We first went there Feb 06 and it was £10 then so was surprised when we went end of Nov (just gone) and it was still £10. Planning to go when we get the new van and hubby had noticed it had gone up to £12 which is still great value for money

Spot on!

I take it you liked the site, having been twice and planning on going again.

To my mind, £120 for 10 nights in summer is fab value for money.

Yes it's a lovely peaceful site, well worth the money.  Was hoping to go in a fortnights time but they're not open till 1st Feb but they did give us a number of another site nearer to Stillingfleet that is £10 a night so we're booked to go there until they open.  Hope you have a great time.

The forestry commision sites have doubled in price over the last 2 years. They are beautiful but most of them VERY basic yet they now cost as much as the posh sites with all the amenities.

I do realize that some camps do charge for awnings, but some don't but I was trying to say that with the size of the caravan, and they can be big or small, along with an awning the length of the caravan, they are using much more space than a large tent. Yet with tents, some sites charge according to size and don't do the same with caravans.

It's ashame about Forest Holidays, we bought a card last year so didn't know what they were before that.

When you think about it, you have to take your own shelter, equipment, food etc. As for the rain we had last year.....I think site owners should keep it as cheap as possible if they want people to come back. You can stay in a decent guest house for £50 (prefer to camp!) Come on, site owners, buck up your ideas!

MamaBear, I think you will find it's not the size of the tent, but the shape of the tent that site owners are charging more for. A big tunnel tent takes up the same area as a caravan with an awning But some tents with the same ground area, have bedrooms sticking out all over the place and take up 2 pitches.

I have seen some that comment on pod tents but most just charge on size. We're looking at a camp for the summer and there is an extra fee for large tents yet no cost. I emailed and was told there wasn't really a charge for large tents but during bank holidays keep the tents 6m apart.

The thing about caravans is if you use an awning, you're going to be 2ft wider than say the most popular tunnel tent, the vermont L. Prices start off the same till you get to the bottom and see that you are going to be charged more than that same caravan with awning when in effect, the caravan set up is wider. Not all sites charge for an awning. I just never see different prices for caravans with awnings whether they are charged for the awning or not.

Hi polly, looks like this site is next door, dont now about the amenities at the 'cove, site.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=1011

Has anyone stayed or knows of any experiences of the above site? It seems quite reasonable but there are no reviews, now because of that and the fact they have changed their name makes me quite suspicious!!  I'm hoping I'm wrong as it is a lovely part of the country.
