I usually have a folding knife in the car & one in my day pack for walking - reason I have a dental bridge & need it for cutting fruit. Also cames in handy for cutting pizza, pies opening that awkward drink carton, cutting that overgrown bramble on the walk etc. Do many 50+ folk go around with intent of mugging etc. Don't think so - can't run fast enough.

<Banning something means that those with criminal intent will just find another weapon, and those that use the thing legitamately will be penalised.
Banning guns has done nothing to reduce gun crime, but has penalised those that belonged to gun clubs etc>

Since I handed in my handgun collection - I was Home Office approved to run a shooting club as well as MoD and NRA qualified - handgun crime has increased by (various estimates) 50 % plus . Banning doesn't mean the banned object will go away - oh, and I invested my measly compensation in a couple of very nice rifles.

If you'll excuse me suggesting a point.

Like other posters I'm a biker (also a country boy with horses and a camper) and have carried a variety of sturdy, and expensive, folding knives (only one at a time, of course) since I was 16. At the tender age of 52 I still carry a Leatherman and at times a Spiderco folder. I would never use a blade to attack or defend - fast feet are better than most martial arts and get you out of trouble rather than increase the situation. But the point I'd like to make is that it isn't knife crime that is a problem, it is crime!  How can anyone think that sticking a sliver of metal into a body is okay? Those that do have a lack of basic respect for munanity. Killing, cutting or stabbing is against society and the law anyway - how much more does an act have to be illegal? And as for spending good money on a multitool or knife, well a screwdriver has long been a preffered object.

I used to be a Child Care Officer and once took a knife from a youngster who was trying to insert it in a co-worker - don't want to do that again. Will I take a knife camping? Of course, just as a hammer and lighter will be in the tent. Would I slip a knife in a pocket? No, that is then a concealed weapon. What will happen to society? Who the hell can tell.

Have fun camping, I've seen plenty of campers and campsites but no knife fights. Perhaps it is better not to get into a 'ruck' in the first place, if someone is obnoxious then walk away and let them carry on being the idiot they are. However, I do resent being penalised and having my choices taken away when I have done nothing wrong. Having a knife which has been used for cutting bread, cheese, fruit and trapped horses free hasn't hurt anyone, it is a toll for a job and hurting someone isn't a job but a crime.

Tony
