Well, up until a few mintues ago, it was lovely sunshine!!  Now its hammering it down.  We are off for a weekend trip only about an hour and half from home I suppose, but we're still going - hey we have waterproofs, the kids have all in one waterproofs and the dog well he'll roll in puddles!!! shake well and has a towel and as the OH says "none of us are made of sugar!!!" So it'll be alright.  We live in Cornwall and so are used to all  the rain, its warm rain though.

So where ever you all are and going, etc, etc have fun, smile and someone else will smile wiv you!!!

I was very close to cancelling a full paid for week in Cornwall in early July on account of the shocking weather forecasts. I am so glad that we decided to go in the end though as we only had one day of full on rain and the rest was pleasant and sunny! On our rainy day, we put on our best cagoules and headed to the Eden Project (along with every other holiday maker in the South West, LOL) as it was the kind of thing we wouldn't have done if the weather had been nice.As well, I guess you jst need to embrace the wetness: you are going to have to have frizzy hair and the flip-flops will have to stay in the suitcase for another day.

Can see though that a week spent in a tent if it constantly rains would wear you down. For those that rely on cooking outdoors, it can really be a problem. Having flashbacks to eating slightly underdone quiche in Normandy last year!

We haven't managed to go on any weekend camping trips as each time we've tentatively put one in it's peed it down and just hasn't been worth it as we only use a 2 man tent and there isn't much space if you can't embrace outdoors. Fingers crossed for next weekend!!

I thought I would share my recent experience and it might cheer those who have booked a camping trip.

My little fella and I have not long returned from a 3 week camping trip on The Isle of Man. Too be frank the weather was pretty abysmal for a lot of the holiday. We only had two days when it didn't rain. The first 7 days were mostly showery (and they count 4 hours as a shower there judging by the weather forecasts. Then we hit 3 days of continuous rain. I will be honest fellow campers, I did nearly crack on the Friday morning when trogging through the horizontal rain and icy wind. We took refuge in the charity shops of nearby Peel for quite some hours, but it was just miserable. I had a tantrum lol - full shouting and stropping off. Oh yes and that was capped by my sons tent leaking at 4am. I nearly came home, nearly!

However, my little fella and I had a wonderful holiday together. It was so fabulous that I am even considering a month next year. Apart from that one day I just refused to let the weather get to me, and we still went out and did what we wanted. Luckily my son and I are experienced campers and we have a good array of waterproofs, wellies and bad weather gear. We were staying on a friends farm and after a week of trying to dry soggy clothes I finally succumbed to their inisistence that I use their washing machine and tumble drier. My son had run out of dry socks and he is so wee that I was concerned about him getting hyperthermia (no really, it was that wet and cold).
Once I hung my purist principles out to dry I had a ball!
On the truly dreadful days we took to the car and my son watched DVD's on his portable DVD player and I read and listened to the radio.
Inbetween the horrendous weather we also got some good spells of sunny, if a little windy weather. Not very warm , but pleasant enough to explore the beautiful countryside and enjoy some touristy joys. We even managed to get stripped off an go swimming in a river on the last night. It was actually warm enough!
I think sometimes you just have to accept what is thrown at you. It is not the weather I would have liked, but I still came back with a tan (or is is windburn?)and my son can't wait to go back next year. Neither can I, its one of the best holidays I've had in my life.

I would point out though that taking decent waterproofs and warm gear did make a big difference. Even then my son managed to get his trousers and socks dripping wet, more from jumping in puddles and coming out in stocking feet than anything else. He is only five, so puddles must be jumped in I'm afraid.

The other essential was the DVD player and huge pile of DVD's. He loved doing this as he didn't see a tv for the whole 3 weeks.

Thought it would help those who are waivering.

Tracey D - we are going to Trevornick on Saturday 09/08 - how have you found it , as it is our first time there - a long drive ahead ( 9 hrs ) but we have opted for a super Euro tent as we did not think our beloved vango Aurora would survive bad weather

Thanks for all your relpies everyone.

We are still going. 48 hours and we will be there, set up and hopefully the first beers cracked open!

The forecast for Saturday has got worse, we are forecast rain for every day apart from the last one, so we could be striking in the dry .

We don't have DS's, portable DVD players or anything else like that, and we have to cook outside (I don't fancy being consumed by a melting fireball) so we are going to have to find our own entertainment and cook in the rain. Luckily I know that the site has board games to borrow!

I think now is the point at which I need to start regretting not going to France with my sister and parents!

West Wales here we come!

The funny thing with Devon is how much the weather varies from place to place - here in Chudleigh we have a kind of microclimate - it has been sunny and warm all day, but both times we ventured out  - to Exeter and then in the other direction, it was raining - back to Chudleigh and it was still sunny - this seems to happen a lot.  I think it is because it is SO hilly - we are inbetween Haldon and the moors and sometimes the rain just kind of misses us!  NOT saying we don't get any of course...

We decided against Cornwall and have booked into Stowford Farm Meadows (going next Tuesday) mainly cos when it rains in Cornwall there is SO little to do - apart from the Lizard where the walking is lovely - I find inland Cornwall a bit bleak and depressing in placesd - at least in North Devon there is stuff to keep us occupied and we are only an hour from home if it gets too awful.

I am getting really fed up with it all to be honest - 25 years of camping - and so many wet holidays.

Jackie
