That's very possible. My son works as an Outward Bound Instructor in Dorset, 250 miles from here. He was home in July for a few days and travelled both ways by train for under £20 each way by booking split journey advanced tickets.
For a single traveller, going by car is a mug's game. A couple of years' ago, I went backpacking around Snowdonia, travelling from Chorley to Bala for a couple of nights, Bala to Dolgellau for a couple of nights, Dolgellau to Harlech for a night, Harlech to Black Rock Sands (Porthmadog) for a night and finally Porthmadog to near Caernarvon for a night, before returning home to Chorley. The cost? £14.50 for an Arriva North West and Wales weekly explorer ticket. It would have cost me at least four times that in petrol.
Of course, to use public transport effectively, you have to do your research. As an example, a quick search for a seat on the mid-week 9.15am Manchester to London train can cost £230 for a standard return. But if you book an outbound standard Advance (single) ticket at £26, returning also on a standard Advance at £13, it will cost £39 on the same trains.
