I love the idea of back to basics, my brother in law keeps talking about him and I going wild camping but don't know if we ever will.

Also we had just watched Brokeback Mountain at the time he suggested it so I am a bit wary............

I know this is an old thread now but thought I would just note how we have got on with being carless............

We decided to go with using the Yaris and it was absolutely fine, really made us think about what we packed and how we packed and by being careful and using every available space, including under the front seats we managed perfectly well.  It also meant we had to pack the tent properly before we could leave the site, rather than just dumping it in the bag and repacking when we got home as we usually do!

So it means we can carry on being carless as we have really got used to not having one and have no really need for one and we can carry on camping too!

What a great thread, and I am so pleased you managed in the Yaris. A lesson for all of us there I think. Sadly I could not manage without a car, I did try but it's a two hour trip to work, each way!

My partner has a Honda Jazz (I drive a lumbering great big Estate Car) so we always go in my car. Perhaps we should take a leaf from your book and try the Jazz!

That way I can sell my estate and get another Audi TT yippeee!!

Hi.I went camping in my little Yaris (Doris) last weekend and tbh if it's 2 adult's + 2 kids it will not be big enough. I went with just myself and my daughter in the front and filled the back seats and boot with all of our stuff, but couldn't get our table in, this was only the normal basic kit as well. Personally I wouldn't put roof bars on my Yaris or a trailer, would not feel comfortable adding more weight to such a little engine, would probably invest in a cheap and bigger run around.

Even the smallest of cars is powerful enough to handle a camping trailer.

Thats exactly what we have - 2 Adults and 2 kids, we have a Vango Orchy 600 tent and we took everything we need (although we couldn't fit our table in either) we took all our chairs, the cooker the gas bottle and didn't feel we desperately needed anything else.

I'm not saying the Yaris is perfect but it is certainly managable but I think in the long run I would agree something bigger would probably be better and my kids are only 8 and 4 so when they're older we couldn't really get away with using their foot space!
