Mercedes estate - looks like a hearse - four of us, two at six foot and the other two not far off. Everything has to fit in the boot otherwise it isn't coming. Can sleep in it too in emergencies including an airbed (Northumberland, Spring Bank hols 2007!!)
It's true though the bigger the car the more you take, or rather the bigger more fanciful the things you take..eg we went from cooker on two bricks to cooker on a kitchen stand with larder, ground sheet and dome to fully sig'd with carpet and from simple folding stool thingys to lafuma reclining chairs with lovely plump headrests!
We used to do the same length runs down to south of France in a Punto..even went four and the MIL down to Hungary once in the punto and that with one of those huge child seat jobbies as the youngest was still of an age where compulsory on the continent ... now there's a tale for another time.
