Ok just for you lot (cos you are all so friendly) I have not only booked a long hot summer for Weymouth, I have booked it for the whole of the UK, SUN SUN SUN, hope that is ok with everyone??
JANEY_WAYNEY we are going to sea barn camping site (which lets you use the facilities is West Fleet Camp site about 1 mile down the road) I figured we would get the best of both worlds having use of pool etc but also the quieter campsite to sleep on and chill. Heres hoping my theory is right. Think we might go for the whole 2 weeks!
Thanks for all your replies.

The moral is - if you do move sites, don't choose two sites miles apart with no motorway between - and don't move on a BH weekend! Travelling overnight did save us the myther of the huge traffic queue that appeared on the same route as we travelled on overnight cos of a huge RTA.
This year, one site, two weeks. Next year, three weeks in France if I can persuade OH, but we will move site just the once if my plan comes to fruition.
I think ten days is an ideal amount of time to spend on a site, tbh. And I agree, ddon't move far. We've found that about 200Km is about right...off site by noon, drive 3-ish hours, arrive with enough time to get pitched before dinner. We have a grazing lunch in the car (keeps the kids mouths busy anyway) and I have something simple organised ready for dinner, or we use the campsite takeaway.
Having said all this we're going to be staying on the same site outside Amsterdam for the entire 16 days we're camping this summer. First time camping in the Netherlands and plenty to see and do in the area, so we don't feel the need to move on.

Lol - we must have huge attention spans in comparison to so many of you! We've been going to Dumfries & Galloway for over 10 years now, hiring a static, camping and caravanning and we still find new things to do every visit!!
We've had two seasonal pitches for a total of 3 years and we've spent over a week down that way already this year, with another 8 days booked for next month. Friends have been hiring the same cottage for 3 weeks at a time for at 5 years, and have also had the odd other week there, too.
We do visit other places, home and abroad, but we always want to go back to D & G - there's just so much to do and so much beautiful scenery. We always have the dogs with us so spend a lot of time walking in woods - shelter from rain or sun!! - and on our last trip we found 3 new walks - brilliant!
Any place is what you make of it and I guess we just look for the best. We have our favourite eateries in each town / village / forest and we try to drive for no more than an hour to get anywhere on any day but we still keep finding new places to go.
Can't wait to get back and, having had a few wonderful days down there, we're now thinking of changing our main summer break to go back instead of venturing further north as originally planned. Looks like Culloden and Maragowan may be demoted to long weekends instead...
------------- Best Wishes and Happy Travels,

We go for 21-22 days to France...
when we started we went with Canvas for 19 nights - as you didn't have to put the tent up and down we did 5,8,6 nights on three sites - but still felt like we spent a lot of time packing and unpacking
now we do 2 'main' sites spending 8/9 nights on each and a 2-night stop each way... so last year it was 2 nights in the Loire, 8 (became 9 as the weather was good) in the Dordogne, 8 in the Vendee and 2 in Versailles on the way back.
The only downside is when you leave a 'perfect' pitch and the next one isn't as great.
I don't think there is anywhere I'd want to spend 14 nights if the weather wasn't great as not many places have enough 'bad weather' entertainment.
Have never done more than a weekend in the UK though - here it might be different to France as we have more 'indoor' entertainment.
