i feel the need to admit something here.

on our first proper camping holiday; myself, OH and 2 friends were a little loud past "curfew" on a few nights.

in my defence though, as it was the first rime any of us had camped other than at festivals (were most people are up well into the small hours shouting at each other), we really were not aware of how far our noise travelled.
It was so quiet outside apart from an owl that it was like being in a house with the window open and our minds were stuck in that senario. We eventually realised that canvas did not share the sound proofing properties of brick when the campsite owner gave us a ticking off, whoops!

edit: we didn't wake any children as it was an adults only site.

we haven't been camping with those friends since, and me and OH have the greatest respect for other campers as we realised we love camping and the site we stayed at. Our "camping bedtime" is earlier now, we still like to have fun and a little drinky but we've noticed that our voices now get quieter the darker it gets!

You lot are getting me worried now for our first camp of the year

Only had to say something once to our neighbours in all our years of camping, and that was about 10 years ago.

Three German guys on bikes pitched right next to us, (even though the site was nearly empty), and continued speaking in loud voices until 1 ish, (probably worse as we couldn't understand what they were saying ). Got up, went to their small tent and "knocked" on the tent, door unzipped for me to see three naked men laying on their sleeping bags, beers, (thank God), in hand, surrounded by those little night light candles. Lost for words for a second or two then politely asked for them to keep it down, which they did. They just did not realise how much voices carry at night through canvas.

It's not just the night time either.

We recently had noise from very early risers, before 6am.

They didn't seem to realise that they may as well have been chatting at the bottom of our bed.

My hubby had to have an emergency visit to the loo at 5.15 am and one of them was in the shower and as he strolled past our tent on his way back shouted something to his mate which would have been at 5.30 am.
People don't realise how far their voice carries in the morning.
Kids making a noise in the morning i can understand, but when it's adults, it's just either ignorance or a complete disregard for other campers.

Is it possible that the site managers told them to go??

I use Hayfield quite often and have found the management to be pretty pro-active with any noisy groups.

I hadn't thought of that but yes it is possible. At about 9pm in the evening a woman from the tent opposite them went and had a word, they were a bit noisy but not that bad so I wondered if it was language that she was complaining about. It is certainly possible that they complained to the wardens and that is why they left so early.

Just wanted to add that the wardens and assitant wradens at Hayfield were excellent. One morning the warden let our 5 year old "drive" (steer with a little help) the sit on mower pulling the trailer (to collect rubbish) from the toilet block to our tent. He was lost for words he was so happy
