I did the 'buy everything immediately' thing earlier this year because I knew my wife was never going to take to camping. As it is, she is OK with it because I have all the kit - if I'd bought small and basic, we would never have gone again.
So, we're off on Thursday for 4 days and we've got a week booked in August. Wife still isn't a massive fan but the kids and me really enjoy it.
And I have no regrets with the kit I did buy - there is nothing that we took that we didn't need, apart from the extra table (small, ally thing cost £10 from Tesco, so I bought 2 but we only ever used 1 when away). The tent is great, the carpet is essential IMO, the kitchen table worked really well, the chairs are great etc, etc. I even get on with that pyramid toaster - it's fairly rubbish but it does eventually get 4 pieces of bread vaguely toasted - although I am going to get a couple of those single toasters to replace it
Getting back on topic , I got a lot of advice off this forum but I also asked a couple of friends who are more experienced. Personally, I prefer trying to do things myself normally, just because it is more satisfying, but with camping, I couldn't afford to screw it up, so all advice was happily received.
